Is there a simple programme [ free ] that I can use to rename mp3 files - although I have artist and song title sorted on the I pod , the file names of the mp3 's are all wrong , and I don't really want to have to do each one manually on I tunes .

Thanks
Steve

If you are talking about the ID3 tags that something like Media Player shows as the name of the songs then something http://www.id3tageditor.com/ would probably do - or Google "ID3 Tag Editor"

However you are talking about the actual file names then as you mentioned iPod - I assume you have iTunes? If you do then inside iTunes select
Edit --> Preferences
Then click Advanced Tab
Then enable (put a check against) "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized"
The click OK (and wait for it to do it's stuff)

NOTE(1): if your mp3 files are not in your iTunes music folder (specified on same Advanced Tab) then this will copy the files to the iTunes folder (but also leave the originals where they are. Which means a) You will need a some disk space and b) you will have to remove the originals afterwards.
NOTE(2): this will give the files the following convention
iTunesFolderPath\Artist\Album\TrackNo TrackTitle.mp3
NOTE(3): If you change the path (on the same Advanced Tab) it can be used to move your library from one disk to another which is useful if you run out of disk space)
NOTE(4): Instructions are for Windows version, not MAC version
