My 1150GS (2000) does roughly 27-29 mpg around town. On the open road it returns about 50mpg.

Because it returns so well on open roads with continuous riding i don't think anything can be wrong, but should i expect more around town or does this match what other people get?

Mine has a Remus 'Revolution' can with the cat still fitted (and the 'yellow' boxed jumper fitted in motronic).

I use mine for my work as an instructor and yes fuel consumption is awful around town:rolleyes:

MPG ?

I have a '97 R1100RS with the same Remus pipe,no cat.
The fuel consumption is rubbish in town but loads better on a run.
It was the same with the standard exhaust.
I know it's set up right 'cos Steptoe has had his hands on it.:D

If your trying to conserve fuel look at not braking hard rolling off the throttle more not racing away from the lights etc and keeping the engine in its optimal effeciency revs - not the best for performance etc.

Or just accept in town MPG is useless and really the biggest factor in town is the riding style so have fun put a tenner in the tank and don't care!

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like mine is running perfectly, thirsty in town, lean elsewhere.

Will continue to enjoy as i was!

Around town and back and to work i get 40mpg and on long trips 70mpg (R1150GS 2002) if i worked mileage correct that is (standard 22.5 litre tank)

My calculations might be off a little but i never actually use the complete 22.5 litres, there's usually about a litre left when i fill up so i have worked on: 21.5 ltr used for approx 130 miles (that gives me around 27.5 mpg).

To get 40 mpg around town sounds damned good!

27 mpg ?

Slippery,
27 mpg is rubbish.
You should be getting 35 mpg plus unless you ride everywhere bouncing off the rev limiter !
I see you're in North London ?
Might be worth your while heading over to Roehampton to see Steptoe ?
He'll set the fuelling properly for you.
Geoff.

Thanks Geoff. I started the thread because I didn't think much of the town mileage (I'm actually sure I get comfortably more than 50 mpg on the open road). 35 mpg sounds a little more like it. Clearly I'm not the only one out there with crap in-town mpg...

I've read lots of threads about re-setting the motronic to run differently (hence my mentioning the 'yellow' boxed jumper) when fitting a new can and I've wondered if the exhaust set up and the 'yellow' box are the cause? The bike runs really well otherwise, bar the gentle surging that I'm almost oblivious to now.

I get 7.9 miles per litre on the R1150GS almost regardless of everything. I never use it for journeys of less than 5 mins, so it gets to warm up, but whether flat out on French/Spanish Autoroutes or crawling along the A25/B2026/A22 on the morning commute, consumption never seems to vary at all.

My R1100S manages (just) over 10 Miles per litre on identical routes (with no speed difference except on very long motorway runs ie Sevenoaks to Cardiff), when it is approx 12% shorter journey time (than the GS), but fuel just doesnt seem to be affected.

Well, I like the sound of that if I've done my sums right you're getting about 170 mpg regardless. I don't get this, why aren't you getting a much bigger return on open roads? My shortest journeys are 35 min, plenty for everything to be up to temp.

The only thing I think I can do is change the air filter...but I can't see that giving me another 30-40 mpg around town?! That's a big difference.

Confused? Yep!

My bike works everyday all year round, 45-50mpg town riding and when on longer runs 65mpg. Give it welly and its about 40mpg. Running Remus, no cat and K and N also the 140000 may help!!

Get it set up properly

Forget about "jumper mods" etc.
Get the throttle bodies set up properly.
If there's any hint of surging it's off.
My old knocker will plod along at 5mph on the throttle smooth as you like.
Go see Neil, tell him Geoff sent you.:beerjug:

Correction on my last post, meant to write 35 mpg, hadn't finished the calculation :blast (170 mpg really would GOOD! :D )

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm beginning to think the variation in what people are getting is down to what kind of 'town' riding people are doing. For me there are frustratingly few open roads. Lots of stop-start and rarely more than a mile without a set of lights! Yes, very frustrating! But somehow I still have the bug after all these years :)

Thanks Geoff.

Mines a single spark. Had this idea it was almost impossible to eliminate the surging completely? So now you've got me thinking!

Cheers
