You must have been a long way from a filling station for the need to do 50mph, on looking at your petrol gauge...
It's quite easy to get huge numbers on the mpg readout. Sustaining them is the hard part. JJH

Once seen 65 mpg on my last bike, a K1600GT, while leading a group of old bikes on a run.
Where in the Peak can you be that's so far from a petrol station.... I'm guessing but I reckon you could not pin point somewhere in the Peak no more than 20 miles from fuel

There are very few petrol stations within the Peak park. Asbourme, Buxton, Matlock, Wirksworth, yes but they are all outside the park. Bakewell has petrol but there are very few other places to buy fuel.

The OP with a 1/3 of a tank... pushes reset on the trip fuel consumption coasts a few miles then takes a picture and posts with some lame exscuse about no fuel stations.

The main reason I started the subject up was the difference between pre and post hilltop.
The one thing I was not expecting was an increase in mpg.
The mpg was exaggerated as explained but by the end of the day it was 61.5 mpg its never done that before normally in mixed riding I get between 49mpg and 54mpg
You would think enriching the mixture would make the mpg worse ?
I'm going to ring Geoff just out of interest.
Or am I just boring and full of bollox?

I have made my LC read over 70mpg when tootling along, and there was no need to Hilltop it either

The good news, you are not alone and it's just temporary and soon you will become a content Hilltopped bike owner who is at one with his bike.
Fuel consumption on a GS is effected by many things, my cross country commute returns c49 mpg with the hotter weather during the last week I've not been wearing any bike protective gear which means I just knock the edge of how I ride. It's maybe added a couple of mins to a 50min commute but my mpg for the last 300 miles is showing as 55.4
As my bike doesn't have a fancy lardy da fuel consumption bollocky wotsit I'm technically not entitled to contribute to this wonderfully informative and entertaining thread, but I'm going to anyway.......
.....if your running out of fuel and your in mortal danger of being marooned almost miles from civilisation why have you left the engine running while taking a photograph? If you twatted around with camera settings only half as long as Giles does while snapping your masterpiece no wonder your low on petrol.

When I'm deliberately running the tank dry I carry spare fuel. 2.5 litres = 25 miles. But when the fart about "sucking jet pump" plays up, it stops way sooner than it should and about 10 miles worth of reserve ends up trapped on the wrong side of the fuel tank.
The OEM fuel tank system is all about "fancy lardy da fuel consumption bollocky wotsit". Great when new (and sold lots of bikes) but fundamentally it's all bollox.
There is nothing wrong with a simple float fuel gauge and a fuel tap to switch to reserve. I'm all for innovation when it adds value but who knows why BMW needed to fix something that had no need to be fixed.
