I have the "paid once" version of MRA and associated apps, however, a number of people have mentioned to me that Calimoto provides different functionality, especially when it comes to letting it decide upon creating interesting routes between points A and B. I know very little of the functionality of MRA et al, let alone Calimoto. Does anyone on here know if MRA will do everything Calimoto does, or would it be worth signing up for the annual subscription to Calimoto for those times I want the computer to create me a decent trip between A and B?

MRA nav app on my phone does allow (besides all other features included) me to create a round trip or to a single destination routes, based on my current location for a start/finish routes. All I have to do is select a direction (compas) and the distance that I wish to travel. It will then throw out a route that it has decided I would enjoy. I paid one time fee of £129 a couple of years ago for a Gold Membeahip. I can’t see me going back to using Garmin. Not that there is much wrong with Garmin.

Here a few example routes from MRA Route planner.

I too have a gold membership of MRA. I have been trying to see if MRS would create a nice "interesting" route automatically from my hotel in Swansea, through the hills and valleys, and end up in Fishguard (for an upcoming trip to Ireland). I have been successful and am wondering if its the right tool for this task, or if Calimoto would be better....

I have tried the "Destination" option as per your handwritten comment, but it only creates routes to my destination from where I am now - not where I will be on Sunday. I guess perhaps I need to create a route in the web version and use it on MRA on the day - unless you can see where I am going wrong?

I have very limited (free trial time) experience with Calimoto long time ago. So can’t comment.

If it was me, I’d try to create A—>B route on Google maps also something like kurviger.com and in MRA. See which one would give me a better option that I’d like to ride.
In MRA at least you can save the route that it spat out at you, and then be able to go into it and tweak it (by means of adding extra waypoints) to it to utilise the roads that you feel you’d like to ride but it has ignored them for you.

In that case, use MRA planer tab, but you phisically need to place waypoints on roads that you wish to ride.
The single and round trips are originated from your current location. Great option if you are touring in Europe and haven’t created any routes at all and are open minded type.

This is a bit late but if you open up the "Route lab" option on the app it will take you to the full web version of the planner. Go to generator and it will show you a blank map. Go to "Show roundtour settings" at the bottom of the map and you can start generating a roundtour from any location that you enter in the dialog. By selecting "Create a scenic route" you can enter any start point and any destination and generate a scenic route. The only gotcha for this is you need a decent Wifi or phone signal to use the main website. The app will generate a scenic route to a destination without WIFI or phone signal (from where the phone is located) if you have the relevant maps loaded on your phone, but needs Wifi or phone signal for a scenic round trip. I don't use the scenic route options as I prefer to plan my own routes but this might be helpful to some.

I’ve tried both and they both seem to want one to go the route they chose. I much prefer basecamp as I get to choose the route.

Yes I do the same I plan my routes on basecamp or increasingly MRA to take the route I choose.
