MT Promises ?

Quick update on the MT 10- I've done over 1500 miles on this trip so far . This has ranged from a 720 mile day blatting the length of France and well into Spain on autoroutes and then serious twisties for 100s of miles in Asturias, the Picos, and now the Pyrenees.
I have 'Tracer-ized ' the bike by fitting most of the Yamaha extras which include the Comfort Seat, Akra, sport screen, heated grips, quick shifter, panniers, tank bag and hand guards .
The panniers and tank bag are Yamaha branded SW Motech products. They integrate very well. The panniers fit very snug and the tank bag uses a quick release ring.
The panniers aren't the biggest but they don't add the bulk and weight that you get with larger panniers so the bike doesn't feel loaded up. By adding a Kriega US20 which I Rok strap to the pillion seat , I've got enough stuff for this 2 week trip !!

So to the actual ride - the bike was a bit of an unknown quantity for me as I had only ridden it pottering round on Guernsey, but it felt right when I tested it and this has more than proved to be the case.
It's possibly one of the best riding positions of any bike I've had - the comfort seat is amazing . It's one of those seats that never actually feels comfortable yet never gets uncomfortable , even after 700 miles and 14 hours in one day !!
The seat/bar/peg position is perfect . The leg room is surprisingly good . I'm 6"1' and it's not cramped -I rode a mates Kwak SX 1000 and the pegs on that were much higher !
The forward lean to the bars is just right and combined with the sport screen you can sit at 90 all day long with the cruise control on should you need to make progress. No aches, no back ache, nothing . On other bikes such as GSs etc I would have eventually felt it in my lower back but the MT has nailed it and the lean combined with just enough wind off the screen supports you perfectly .

The engine is sublime . I tend to ride in A mode as B is just a tad too twitchy on all but the smoothest roads. The power delivery is addictive and the bark from the Akra is mental !!!

Handling is fantastic with the Michelin Pilot Road 4s.

Niggles -very few .
The suspension could be a tad more compliant at times.

Biggest niggle is tank range. Tank is 17 litres. At autoroute speeds it'll return 42 mpg and typically 125 miles to flashing empty but then still have 3 1/2 litres left so another 30 ish to empty . On normal roads , 46 mpg so about 135 miles then 30 left to dry.

If tank was say 22 litres then it would up the range to a good 165/175 plus reserve and that would be simple to do in one go due to the total comfort !

So , for me , a bike that has cost around £10k with all extras has exceeded all expectations totally and utterly . It is amazing . If you can only have 1 bike , don't think the MT 10 isn't suitable . It is !!

And every time you wind it open and feel that 155 bhp you will be laughing inside your helmet !!!

Nice review Martin. I assume you're canceling the new KTM now?

I've absolutely no need for another bike . I could happily live with just the MT 10 or AT. But I like the idea of doing different trips on different bikes . So why cancel ?

Shame you never got to try the GT I've just been away to Spain with a group and a mate on a MT10 and the GT is stunning quick, the 1290 engine is devastating quick motor it really does get the old ticker racing, I compare the impact from the torque @ peak to a bungy jump I did last month where you feel the insides of your body do strange things.

That's a very useful endorsement, thanks! I took one out for a couple of hours (the no-screen version), and liked everything other than the lack of wind deflection, and exhaust noise. At the price it is - it is looking better and better. Might have to add a 5ltr fuel can for the long-distance slogs, but - other than that...... I quite fancy one

It all sounds lovely but do you really want to tour on an inline 4?

When it's fitted with a 155 bhp cross plane engine ? Oh yes !!!

The GT may be stunningly quick but so is the MT10 and it's £5000 cheaper !!!

I rode the wonderful N625 from Cangas to Riano both ways last week and also stopped at the same place for lunch. Had a slightly surreal moment a couple of km south of the lunch stop when I found a road worker standing in the middle of the road using a petrol leaf blower. He was clearing a section of the road of small pieces of rock, stone chippings, gravel etc which presumably had fallen or been washed off the overhanging cliffs. Nice idea apart from the fact that he had carefully blown his collection into a strip covering the entire width of the road for about 10 metres.

Simply the best days riding I've ever had ! And I've ridden all over the world !

Today I rode the N260 from Ainsa at about km marker 458 all the way past Figueres at km marker 40 ish then broke off to climb the pass up and over to Cadaques for the night !

The whole N260 was simply stunning but the stand out bits for me were the stretches from Sort to La Seu D'Urguell which is km 275 to 235 ish and then the icing on the cake was from Puigcerda to Ribes de Freser. Km 175 to 140 ish.

Sublime road like a private race track up and over the Collada de Toses !

The MT10 could have been designed just for this road . Totally stunning

You really are a master at the sarky one liners !

Good point, well made !!! I've toured on two different 4s and a twin this year and all were great in their own way.

The MT 10 in my opinion is the biggest bargain currently on sale . It's a stunningly good bike . The only thing it won't do well is take a pillion . But if you ride solo on road there is no finer bike for 10k and very few full stop !!

Boring -ish day . First 30 miles interesting routing over into France at the end/beginning of N260.

Then a blat up the autoroute to Digne Les Bains to pick up the RN85 into Castellane. And I think we all know what the RN85 is better known as

Weather still fabulous . Had an hour of rain when I crossed the border into Spain last Sunday but been blue skies ever since .

I'd take boring days like that all day long

The perfect day today . Stroll around Castellane market then an 80 mile loop around the Gorge Du Verdon.
It's only 18 months ago since I did the whole loop but I'd forgotten just how good .
The Rive Droite is best for the views. But make sure you follow the Routes Des Cretes, which is a left turn off the D952 onto the D23, shown as a dashed road below

The views are stunning .

After over 2300 miles of this trip, the MT10 really showed that it doesn't like rough road surfaces, but the Routes Des Cretes is VERY bumpy as I recall it being bad even on my Super Enduro.

But then go ride the Rive Gauche (left side) and it's stunning .

The whole side is unbelievable but the best bit is the first 10 miles or so after crossing the bridge over the Gorge as shown here :

The ride up to Aiguines is impossible to convey . The road climbs 2000 feet and snakes through a forest with perfect cambers and hairpins. This is the section I mean

Stop for lunch in Aiguines. Beautiful old village.

So I'm back in Castellane for the night at my fav old hotel , the Grand Hotel Du Levant, with one of my favourite views out of the shutters

Heading to Sospel tomorrow night , obviously via the Route Napoleon to Grasse and then along the coast from Nice to Menton then up the RDGA.

I'm not a fan of the Riviera , hence why I always stay in Castellane or elsewhere but does anybody know of a nice quiet spot for lunch on the coast ?

Yes Castellane is a great place to overnight, stayed there in July at the "Ma Petite Auberge", also a nice hotel over looking the square.

Stayed in the "Hotel des Etranger" in Sospel, garaged the bike in their cellar, also has a pool.

Looking forward to you're trip on the RDGA.....:thumb2
