Having removed my hugger, it reminds me why I fitted it in the first place! I'm amazed at the amount of shit that gets deposited on the bike & bots without it.

I'm tempted by the Mudsling (despite the current debate about rubbing, which I'm sure must be easily solvable), but before I order, are there any other non-hugger alternatives... ? :nenau

Fully agree that the GS is just about the worst Bike ever for throwing up Road Crap, (seems to be designed in). I have a Hugger fitted and have also "blanked out" the rear frame "sides" with sheet rubber and still we get plastered. There is a tread on here somewhere by a French Chap who made up a full sized rear Mudguard which looked good and did the Job. It wasn,t an easy fix though involving some tricky machining and good craft skills.

Just a thought, but does anyone think the amount of road crap thrown up may have something to do with the type of Tyres fitted, ie Tourances with their big Block Pattern tread. Has anyone noticed a reduction in road crap after fitting Proper Road Tyres ?.

I'm on Tourances at the moment... but moving on to TKCs.... I can't see it being any less messy with pure road-use tyres

I was very happy with Motorrad Concepts hugger for road use, but mudsling seems like a better solution all-round - no additional unsprung weight, good protection on-road & off, doesn't trap mud in tyre and suitable for knobblies too. I just wondered whether there was any competition - it seems like an easy concept for other manufacturers to copy ( or 'adapt' ;) ).

Yes, there is an alternative to the Mudsling. Same principle, though. Sold by Wunderlich, see their website. Here's what it looks like :

The advantage over huggers is less unsprung weight as mentioned, and no extra noise. Mudsling or Wunderlichs Inner Fender do the same thing, so it's a personal choice. Quite happy with it, does an excellent job.

I had a Motorrad Concept Hugger before, also worked fine, but it touched the tyre, and after some 40000 miles cracks appeared in the plastic from vibrations I guess.

another alternative is the home made version from Dahuom, just search for hugger and it will be there including an drawing. I did it, as I didn't like the look of a hugger, took me 2 hours and cast.. nothing as I had some rubber sheet at work. Worke a treat and can't be noticed.

Just found the Post by jean6 who is in Nice France. Very good Pictures and Details, Dimensions etc. Not sure how to add link to his actual post but a search under jean6 does the trick.

Thanks, and for ref:

Wunderlich: http://www.bmwbikebits.co.uk/shop/item.asp?itemid=3705&catid=
GBP99.01 + Shipping GBP9.70 (estimated)

Mudsling: http://www.nippynormans.com/prodinfo.asp?number=MAM-M-SLING08&variation=&aitem=2&mitem=2
GBP89.00 + Shipping GBP8.50

They seem very similar, but Mudsling is a little cheaper (in UK) and looks less clunky (IMHO)... so I guess it's Nippy for me... :thumb

Thanks for replies. :)
