Taking a ride down to Mullegeo, with the brother in law, to see Rossi and fancied a detour to the nurburgring. Could anyone recommend a route that will give us a decent ride through the Alps without going too far out of our way. I did spot the earlier thread but was hoping someone might have advice more relevant to our route.
Not quite the trip I had planned to china but still 'these are the days that.....':JB:JB

Ta

Never thought I'd learn to spell as well thankyou for pointing it out.:)

I`ve done this trip myself and on my first time I was surprised to find many of the Alpine passes still impassable due to snow, even in early June. It`s something you will need to consider and maybe be prepared to change your route/plans on the move.

You`ll thoroughly enjoy it though:thumb

Wherever you end up I am sure you will have a great time.......Have fun :)

Is it not possible, between you and your brother-in-law, to work something out?

The 'ring is a day ride from Calais, but not particularly near the Alps.

Mugello is near Florence, but not a million miles away.

There are lots of threads and trip reports on routes through the Alps, many of which will suit, "without going too far out of our way". Have a search thro' some for inspiration.

Failing any of those, get a copy of:

It will take you no more than a couple hours with a map, over a few pints, to work something out.

Thakyou all for advice I'll be sure to check before setting off. I'm currently out in the Swiss alps half heartedly looking for work and if you keep steeling all the snow it'll be possible to make it through sooner than you think. There was a whole day of rain last week which absolutely ruined the snow conditions. Sitting here, in Verbier, with fog clogging up the windows watching you moan about the snow on the BBC, send it all to us we need it.

I can't wait, whatever route we end up taking it'll be a much enjoyed. Not sure if the brother in law will be up for the 'ring, he's got one of them shiny red Italian bikes and struggles to keep up at the best of times.

Another vote for John Herman's book.

You can also have a look at our site. We've ridden virtually all the passes you might take to cross the Alps into Italy:

currently planning a trip to Mugello at the mo too
ferry is booked from hull 4 people on 4 bike 64 quid each
planning on motorway from the port to somewhere like dinant then heading south from there
the route south is canny easy just look at the mich maps and pick the ones with green borders and i cant go wrong
we are sailing a week before the gp aiming to spent a few days in the alps (hope passes are open)

main thing we are looking at at mo is hotels/campsite/B&B around mugello & tickets for the gp may end up camping have camped in the alps last year and tend to get sick of packing tent up

another vote for that book

Just stumbled across this thread ....

Wapping is right to point you in the direction of Alpineroads.com - a very useful site for planning an alpine trip.

If you're going to the Ring try and take the 258 - a good road.

Wapping is also right (!) that its Your trip. You decide!! Your journey will be all the more enjoyable for it. :thumb

Take ear plugs to Mugello, them pesky kids with their engines on trolley sacks .... :rocketwho
