Driving to work to Donington Park and I got to about four miles away and the bike just lost all engine power and all electrical power. Speedo and rev counter needles are still stuck where they were.

No power at all now. Checked battery terminals and wiggled the ignition switch wires. Nothing.

Now before I picked it up the garage put a new battery on. Didn't think anything of it, but now maybe there was more to it than that??

Anyhow, stuck at the side of the road now, not happy!!

Are all the fuses ok. Can't think of anything else except get it recovered and scanned

Where was it last serviced? You should prosecute them for attempted murder!:rob

Check the electrical connector block under the fuel tank on the right-hand side (the one you'd disconnect if you were to take the tank off).

Wires can chafe in the channel alongside the battery. Maybe the disturbance caused a short circuit. Either way, the garage need to sort it out - they were last people doing stuff on the bike.

So, a kind man stopped and had some jump leads, tried it on his car and the needles moved, and ignition came back on. Wouldn't start though.

Went to work, left the bike in a garden (I asked first), borrowed a battery from an S1000rr, popped it on the GS, and bingo, started straight away.
Now I don't think the battery is being charged as the headlight doesn't got brighter when I rev it. It should shouldn't it? I've got my battery on charge now so hopefully that will get me home tomorrow then ill get the garage to look at it.

Lights dont get brighter these days.

Get a voltmeter/multimeter and check across the battery terminals when the engine is running. You should register 14.0-14.4 volts ish - which will indicate that you are charging okay.

Just a guess but maybe the battery has completely failed and whilst the jump would help if its shorting itself out its unlikely to help.

If you have a GS911, that will telll you if the battery is charging.

If i recall its a couple of seconds after engine start, that the alternator kicks current to the battery.

As Bendy says Normal charging voltage is around 14.4V A static battery without load should be 12.3 - 12.8V

My poor / non starting in the main was the starter - although we replaced battery, leads, & brush packs along the way

First thing I'd check is the earth lead. My pals bike did exactly what you describe. The AA and triumph couldn't figure it out. Totally charged battery but nothing. Took the earth lead off and emery clothed the terminal and clamp, replaced and bobs your uncle.
With jump leads we could start it but that was only if they were touching the earth lead and not just on the terminal. Its not called elec trickery for nothing you know.

Thanks for everyone's replies and help. Just got home from work on the bike.
I used an S1000rr battery. On inspection the battery the garage put in was a really tall battery, and it looks like the positive battery terminal shorted against the metal bar under the seat as the cable cover has burnt through. Evidence of this is on the seat bar aswell.
The s1000 battery is not as tall and seemed to work OK. What is the normal 2009 GSA battery?
Also no my odometer is flashing. Any ideas?

Did they install the incorrect battery as a replacement?

Which part is flashing the dial or just the backlight?

BTW a direct short may well have buckled the battery plates hence why it faulty even when jump started
