So it's about time I had a bash at this trip report malarkey, especially as it's wet and grisly out there at the moment. First time doing this so have at it :)

I had some time this summer, and had a ferry ticket booked and had no real plan as usually there is a group of 3 or 4 of us that head off, with me doing a chunk of admin along with the routes etc, but on this occasion I was flying solo. This time I hopped on the ferry at Hull on 21st July without any real plans, the only thing I had booked was the Berghotel Franzishohe on the Stelvio as I like it, and like the location, great for early morning starts on and around the Stelvio area.

So headed off the ferry, and just crunched some miles to get down towards Bamburg in Germany. Started to get a bit fatigued after the 300 mile mark so ended up staying the night at the Euro Hotel at Wertheim, which is your standard sort of Premier Inn type place in Germany, near a decent Italian restaurant and fuel station.

They do a lot of this upside house thing over here as well

Anyway, while waiting for food at the Italian, they gave me a complimentary beer, which was nice

So in the hotel, I hashed out a route to take me over to Czech republic and Plzen so I could push east a bit and then just see where the road takes me.

Day 2 Wertheim to Plzen

Bright eyed and bushy tailed I head off the next morning, going via Bamburg to head into the Czech republic. The reason for heading via Bamburg is I'm a big fan of the black metal band Kanonenfieber and they are from Bamburg, so I stuck on of my band T-Shirts on and went for a selfie under one of the city signs. My inner 12 year old always forces it's way to the front.

While in Bamberg, I have a VERY bizarre experience, one of those sort of "restores your faith in humanity" type things. I am at the sign, trying to take the selfie, when a German lady stops in her car, I speak enough German to get me by, and I explain all is well, I'm just wanting to take the photograph. She has popped her hazards on and offers to take a picture for me.

Exhibit A

I then ask this lovely lady if she knows where I can find a public toilet, she says "Come to my house, I only live 1KM away" I am thinking, Steady on lass, we hardly know each other :) while I mull it over, she phones her husband who says bring him over. OK, so I decide to go, I am either going to have a good time, or end up in a basement, wearing a gimp suit and gag of some type......hmmm, ok, there are positives either way I guess :)

I follow her, go into the flat and meet her husband Joachim, he's making home made Frikadellen and I'm asked to stay for lunch, so I accept. The lady is Irene, and it turns out she is an English teacher at one of the local junior schools. I have a beer, then decline a second, so they send their teenage son Vincent out for an alcohol free Weizen for their English traveller. Cut a long story short I spend most of the afternoon with them, and we are now friends bouncing regular emails around to one another and they are coming over in Spring as they want to visit Liverpool and Manchester so I will return the favour.

A quick selfie on Joachim and Irene's balcony, with my big sunburned melon :) Complete strangers, but some of the friendliest and most hospitable people you could ever hope to meet. Irene got regular updates on my trip, and plotted things for her class on a map, and she got the kids to research, in English, facts about the towns or cities I was visiting enroute.

Anyway, back on the road and heading to Czech republic

Find a decent hotel for the night, the Hotel Primavera in Plzen, the room had a decent view, and the toilet came equipped with what I can only assume was a parts washer or foot bath of some description next to the loo.

Anyway, time to chill out, relax and put something together for the following day.

Day 3 Plzen to Brno

Decided to head to Brno as a Slovakian friends brother lives there, we've chatted over facebook for years but never met, so her brother says he'd like to meet up and we can have a beer and a chat. I hash a route together to Brno as I'm not wanting to use any motorways unless absolutely necessary, and this is what I end up with.

Crossing over the Vltava river gave some great views

To be continued ...............

So continuing DAY 3, as mentioned with some culture in Březnice

20250724_092711409_iOS.jpg

And then continued onwards to Brno where I stayed at the Hotel Vaka, lady on reception was lovely and actually got me to bring the Stelvio into the back of the hotel so it was tucked away nice and safe. I went for a wander over to a nearby shopping centre, and I found one of the strangest vending machines I've seen :)

Some form of massage device if I'm not mistaken.

Day 4 - Brno to Viglas (Slovakia)

Up bright and early to head over to Slovakia, as there where some things I wanted to check out there and say hit to some friends in Trencin, so plotted a route, via Trencin and Banja Bistrica so I could have a quick snoop around the museum of the Slovakian peoples uprising.

I'm a bit of a history buff so some of the battlefields of Napoleons Austerlitz campaign were a stones throw from my route, so decided to check out where the cheese eating surrender monkeys won one :)

20250725_091930357_iOS.jpg

Stelvio is a joy to ride around here, and nothing seems to busy.

20250725_090148365_iOS.jpg

Anyway, onwards I head to the Slovakian border and to Trencin

20250725_113145090_iOS.jpg

And into Trencin itself, which has a mix of medieval charm, and communist bloc "charm" to it :)

20250725_120431165_iOS.jpg

And as they say, to be continued............

Good stuff.

Lovely bike that too

Continuing on through Trencin, I picked up the "14" heading to Banska Bystrica and this was a lovely section of road, really enjoyable fast sweepers, and I was lucky to have reasonably decent weather.

1765139105778.jpg

Found a couple of off the beaten track routes to take to get into Banska bystrica

20250725_131252828_iOS.jpg

And some quaint old buildings on the way.

1765140694327.jpg

Stopped for fuel in Banska and asked about a decent hotel for the night, and said I'm looking to get close to Viglas and they suggested the Hotel Grand Viglas, so checked it out on Hotels.com app, and bingo, a castle, with underground spa and only 55 Euro a night.

20250725_153112000_iOS.jpg

20250725_161750877_iOS.jpg

After check in, settled down in the courtyard for a beer and some food, I believe I have to post at least one food shot :) Later that evening some cosplaying minstrels showed up and played, I mean the medieval type, not the "howdy doody black and white" type :)

Goat cheese bacon lardon and pesto starter ........

20250725_162709692_iOS.jpg

Followed by pork loin

20250725_163454479_iOS.jpg

So, after another beer, and hashing out a route for the next day, which would take me to the Slovak capital, Bratislava, where I decided to take a couple of days to explore and have a rest.

Really liked the Grand Viglas hotel though, especially at that price.

20250726_074115154_iOS.jpg

Ever get the feeling you are being watched :)

20250725_151654523_iOS.jpg

So, up early again, get the Stelvio packed up, and head off for Bratislava on day 5

More updates soon, if anyone's interested that is :)

Day 5 - Viglas to Bratislava
So bright eyed and bushy tailed I headed out for Bratislava, and a couple of days off the bike to explore the Slovak capital, I'd hashed together a route that kept me away from motorways and was what equate to A roads and B roads, only 165 miles today, but it was a chilled out day heading through Banska Stiavnica, and then looping over the top of Bratislava to the "503" which was a decent road for bikes.

I'd found a good deal on hotels.com app for a hotel on the side of the Danube, and a 2 minute walk from the city centre, the Hotel Devin, which was a really nice hotel, with some decent views from the room balcony. The route took me through lots of tiny villages that all seemed to have a memorial to the peoples uprising against the Nazi's, or some action in WW2.

Picking my way through the backwaters heading towards Banska Stiavnica, now who ordered those black clouds!

Heading down through Banska Stiavnica

20250726_100815812_iOS.jpg

Dropped in at Kalná nad Hronom, which was a key crossing over the river Hron in the Bratislava - Brno offensive

Wandering around brough on a bit of hunger, so just down the road was "Riders Burgers and Grill" so nipped in to refuel the human engine, tried a black bread burger, with the colouring from activated charcoal, or I think that's what the waitress said :)

1765214720700.jpg

I blagged this image from their website, but as well as good food, you can see the staff had a certain charm about them :)

1765214868675.jpg

Heading on to Bratislava, I stopped to fuel the Stelvio up, and thought I was hallucinating as I swear I saw Godzilla high fiving me :) turns out it's just a tree, and my mind at work.

20250726_130745056_iOS.jpg

Last little push over through the forests and into Bratislava and the Hotel Devin

The view from the balcony of the hotel.

So from here I was taking a couple of days off the bike, and having a wander around Bratislava, my Slovakian buddy (who lives in London) had arranged for some friends of hers to show me around the city.

I have to say I found Bratislava pretty interesting, lots to see and do, and the people were really friendly. In fact so friendly that in one way they saved my trip due to me being a total fuckwit!

I'm steroid dependant after recovering from a brain tumour, (yawn :) ) and have to take hydrocortisone and a few other meds 3 times a day. My mathematics failed me, and I did not pack enough medication...........idiot!!!!

I headed to a local pharmacy on the Sunday morning, the staff spoke English, and walking in was like walking back in time, I explained my problem, they asked if I had a U.K. prescription, I do, showed them on my NHS app. They went to the backroom, a couple more questions and out they came with enough medication to see me through. I ask how much, they just smiled at me and said "nothing". I asked if they needed my passport info, travel insurance, NHS number, they just said "No, enjoy your time in our city and our country". I felt a bit guilty so nipped down the road to a coffee shop and picked up a selection of cakes and some coffee and nipped back to them with it, as it's the least I could do.

So top marks to Lekáreň u Salvátora, and the pharmacy itself is genuinely like stepping back in time.

Dinner beckons, so back in a while with day 6 and 7, and wanders around Bratislava.
