My Bike Has Broken Down - Brakes Locked On

Let us (me) know how the strip down goes - splitting the calipers scares the crap out of me...

You don't have to split the calipers to clean everything up.

Just remove the r clip, then the pad pins (use a punch on the rear pin, and unscrew the front pins) front springs, then just pull the pads out. then unscrew the calipers to get access to the pistons. make sure you clean the pins up to remove all the crud, then grease that too with copper grease.

it's really easy, give it a go, take your time, and be very carefull to keep the red rubber grease and copper grease clear of the disc and friction material on the pads. Make sure you have plenty of clean cloths to hand to keep everything nice and clean ang grease free, including your hands.

I do wonder though how you'd miss it if your bike has a servo, ignition on, engine off it makes a fair old whine when the brakes are touched

Errmm........it was actually the hand guard that had rotated round and was pressing against the brake lever

Pretty obviuos when you actually notice it, but with the hand guard being so close to the lever, and both being black, it is actually quite easy to miss. Design of hand guards could have been a bit better......note to BMW

But there you go, leason learned

I took the opportunity to remove the pads clean everything up with a soft small brass suede brush, put some red rubber grease on the pistons, and a smear of copper grease on the back of the pads, as the brakes were squeaking a bit, and just for my peace of mind.

My 2006 Adventure is non servo, so no whine !

I had that happen to my GS1200(54Plate) When I played about with the handguards.

Very fine tolerance in that area.

Andy when i sold you the bike BMW had sent me a few stickers to "solve" this issue but at the time ( i did offer them you ? ) they seemed pretty useless anyway glad youve sorted it .

You did give me the stickers for the hand guards, I put them with the bikes handbook..............I thought I'd never need them
