My brain is fried

President

Thanks. That's the informed answer I was looking for. I know very little about electronics and needed the opinion of somebody who does. The thought crossed my mind but I wasn't sure. :thumb2

What a polite geezer you are Jim - bike woes - all the flack and still your civil.

You should run for president somewhere!

A fuse protects against excess current, not voltage spikes or voltage in the wrong place. I suspect it wouldn't have made any difference to the outcome.

Sorry to hear of your plight, though.

I just called ECU Testing (ecutesting.com) who used to repair BMW bike ECUs. Unfortunately, they can no longer get the parts so looks like a new box etc.

Also get an F-off ground anchor and chain.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions and positive comments, gents but this thread is 3 years old.
Bruce at post 18 is, I think, commenting on how expensive his Australian quote is, relative to mine in euros.

You're right, Bruce. €612 is roughly AUD830.
My quote didn't include fitting (not sure if there's much time involved) and I suppose we're closer to Germany than you are.

Sorry to hear of the large bill. As suggested above, there may be options.

Jay, the part was replaced and worked. It did take time to get it sorted (almost a month :blast )
If I'd known it was going to take that long to sort and if I'd known there were other possible ways or sorting it, I would have tried them. It left a major hole in my holiday fund at the time. :tears

Thanks KK......the price is for part only, fitting extra.

Part won't be here for 10 days.........

Dealer says it's the first one he has ever had failed.

Just my luck I suppose.

Thinking of dumping the bitch and buying a new FJR1300.

No battery issues at all. Has a Yuasa YTX14-BS from memory which is it's first replacement battery which has been in service for one year.

Update

Spoke to the dealer today. Six weeks, still no part. He said BMW were out of stock and had to manufacture it.

Wonderful performance, NOT!!!

I can;t understand this They tried to hotwire the bike and it blew the brain ????

What was damaged when you got it back??

Key ?? Did you get any display up on the screen ??

Be interesting if they fit the BMS K and it still is fooked??

BMS K is the lock and key of the system It is the datacenter if you like

It's where the code is accepted or rejected for the Key and the rest of the locks undone i.e. the ignition circuits turned live

I found a workaround for a friend for his 1200GS when his display doesn;t show the gear position indicator he can't start it clutch in out sidestand up down he's just fooked so I discovered a wee thing by accident and hid him a wee button fer his starter
i had a stolen recovered bike a while ago,the two wires from the ign switch had been cut and the ecu was fried
on reading the fault codes it came up with just one,
immobilisor fault
the dash lit up ,but the fuel pump would not prime and the starter would not engage.
s/h bms with keys fitted. all good

Bike to dealer May 17, July 29 and still no BMSK in Australia.

Dealer blames BMW, BMW have no clue and cannot advise when it will arrive.

Called BMW customer service in Melbourne, they have no clue, said BMW are too busy manufacturing parts to advise ETA's.

Customer service rep refused to give me the name of their Customer Service Manager in Australia (wow, that's great customer service).

Wrote a filthy email to BMW Motorrad and copied the dealer on Friday.

Will see what response I get today.

Thanks ThorH
Went to the site and inputted all the numbers on the BMSK but came up with nothing.

If you could drop a link I'd really appreciate it.
Cheers

Hi DrFarkoff (wish I could say that to the dealer)

Thanks for the info on the part. The website says that the dealer will be required to provide information and also "assist" with the installation.

Can't see the pr*cks offering too much help.

Will see how it all goes, very disappointing experience.

B

Motorworks have been very friendly in my experience, not sure why you call them pricks. Suggest you call or send them a polite email and ask what they can do for you. Then maybe they will advise you to buy an ECU with the keys that it is programmed to accept, thus saving you a trip to the dealer to program your old keys to work with your "new" ECU.

i think bruce is calling his dealer, not motorworks.:D
if you buy a used bmsk unit you will also need the keys that are coded to it,the replacement unit will then need to be configured to communicate with the other control units already fitted to the bike(engine management, dash, abs ,etc).
this can only be done at the dealer or somewhere that has dealer level diagnostic kit

Good outcome

Outlined my case to BMW Motorrad Australia and their first response was a cut and paste reply with no support.

Sent them another email, a little bit stronger seeking reimbursement of my costs and compensation for my inconvenience due to their delayed supply of the part.

They agreed to supply the BMSK free of charge. A$1339.00

Good result for me, restored my faith in BMW (but I hope nothing else breaks!!)
