Hi Guys,

Just got back from a week's trail riding in spain, and had a load of trouble with my G650 XChallenge on the first day. Essentially after 20 miles of relatively easy riding my bike managed to put over a pint of oil into the air box.

As soon as i noticed the problem, more oil was sourced and the level checked and topped up, and after checking the amount i need to replace, There is no way i'd put to much oil in to start with.

So i'm now rather stumped. What is the likely cause of this? the bike shows no sign of smoke at all, has done less than 1000 miles since it's last service.

Air filter was cleaned before the bike was shipped to spain, but nothing present to indicate there was a serious problem at the time.

Bike also has plenty of compression.

Thoughts please,

Nathan

Thanks for that Jay, the symptoms are pretty much bang on with the problem i'm experiencing. It's either that or the scavenging pump is fecked, but i ran it up after cleaning the air box out, and to check oil level again, and nothing came out of the breather on tick over. From this i presume that the scvanging pump is fine, and it's at higher revs/load that the seal on the balancer shaft fails then?

It was checked hot Tim, bike was run up until the fan came on, which is i think what the manual suggests...

And then leave it for a couple of minutes before checking?

It's not unusual for F650s to put some oil through the breather into the air box after hard riding but a pint is quite excessive if there's no obvious poor running symptoms, I know your's is the G but this does suggest too much oil to start with

I checked the bike over before shipping to Spain Tim, and the levels were fine.

Once i realised there was a problem, i drained most of the oil off the airbox into a bottle. I also topped the engine up with a new bottle of oil, so i knew exactly how much it had taken to bring the levels back. This was around 500ml, and even after checking the bike over back over after reassembly, the oil was still a little on the low side.

I don't think there are any poor running problems yet because the engine hasn't had a chance to suffer from oil starvation?

Will take the bike for a spin when i get it back, but re-route the breather into a plastic bottle so i can see wunder what circumstances the engine is throwing oil out.

You're saying this happened after only the first 20 miles, did it happen again?

Was the bike ever on it's side during shipping? :augie

Don't think there was room in the van for any of the bikes to go over on their sides. And Greg Masters didn't look very guilty when i started finding the oil problems . I haven't ridden it since Tim, wanted to get it home and do some research before running it and risking further damage, and even more mess.

Once i've got it home i'll try it around the paddocks here at home and see if the symptoms persist.

When you checked the oil hot, how did you measure the level on the dipstick?

Dipstick .................just resting on the threads?

or

Dipstick screwed in, fully?

Dipstick fully screwed back in, which as i understand it is not how it's done, but it's been consistent through this problem....

Well i finally got the bike back yesterday evening, and this afternoon i went for a 10 mile ride with the breather pipe rerouted into a plastic bottle in the tank bag.

The bike had a real mix of riding, from slow work around town, to a good healthy blast with with throttle against the stop on a quiet B road.

Not a spot of oil in the bottle, and i also topped the tank up before i went out.

So i guess my bike has been over at some point, but at least i don't have to go replacing balancer shaft seals and bearings :)

I reckon that Greg Masters bloke has a lot to answer for ...... :D

I've heard about his driving ..... :D
