Help please.
2003 1150GS ABS with 18K miles.

Was just on way to a day out greenlaning in Wiltshire when the bike died on me whilst riding.
It just cut out, but all the electrics are on and fine.
The bike now turns over and doesn't fire at all when I try to start it.
When I turn the ignition on you can normally hear some electrical noises, perhaps from the fuel injection system as it primes itself? This noise I now hear is distinctly different.
Can anyone point me in the right direction or is this a main dealer job?

I've checked all fuses in case the fuel injection fuse had gone, but they all look fine.

Thanks
Dave

sounds like the sidestand cut out switch. Is the RID working OK? Dumb ass question, but have you checked all the fuses? No "whirr" on turning the key to the 'on' position means that the fuel pump is not priming, meaning that there is an electrical fault.

DOH! Sorry, just re-read your post and saw you'd checked the fuses.

Side stand cut-out ...

... not sure if the 1150 has one but rough road riding can cause failure

Thanks for replies.
I'll check the sidestand cut out switch.
What's a RID?

I do get the "whir" but it sounds different. Maybe its my imagination just looking for problems though!

RID Rider Information Display, the fuel gauge and temp gauge display thingy on the left side of the instruments :thumb2

Ahhh ok. The RID's all fine.
Everything looks normal.

And the sidestand switch is in good condition.
On listening more closely the sound on switching the ignition on is very different. Its as if its not under any load..... is this the fuel pump?

Hi, I know how you feel as my bike did the same last weekend. Check out all the things the people above have mentioned, plus check outt the thread on my problem.
http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=108643

Turned out to be the immobilser that was the prob on mine. One of the 'zones' (if thats the right word :nenau ) was on the fuel pump and this was faulty causing the pump not to work.
Sounds very similar to my problem, but the other common thing is the sidestand thing.
best of luck,

Rich :)

ps my alarm is a Meta too

Cut out and a "funny" noise in the area you mention could be the usual hall sensor failure. is it a sort of buzzy electrical noise, and does the rev counter jump around ??

The tacho needle doesn't jump about.
The priming noise if I can call it that happens when I turn the ignition on, also happens when I stop trying to start the bike as well.
I also notice that with the ignition on, when I move the engine cut out switch it also makes the same noise when its switched back to on, regardless of whether I'm starting the bike.
Checked the plug with all the wires from the tank.
I notice in another thread you ask if the tank has been off. In my case it has been on and off a lot. But I've done quite a few miles since it was last off.

Ignition on fuel pump primes then stops, put it into gear, and turn the rear wheel so the engine turns/revolves. Does the fuel pump prime as the engine turns .

When I turn the wheel I get the same sound as when the ignition is turned on.

Thought there might be some useful learning for someone here from my misfortune.
The problem was at the quick release fuel connection. It wasn't connected properly!!! Arrrrrggghhh. Feck and toss.
It was enough so that it had been running all week since I took the tank off, but had popped out enough to stop the flow but not enough so that it was visible.
It had flumoxed the dealers as there was no fault codes showing up at all!
Ahhh well anyway thanks for all the help and advice.

This seems a common issue that quick release connectors are not being reinsterted in many cases. Maybe its worth putting a sticky on it.
