My HID doesn't work

I bought a second hand HID thing ages ago and have finally got around to fitting it.
when I turn it on the blub flickers/arcs in the centre and buzzes for a second and thats it
I can't even remember who I got it from, and given its taken me so long to fit it, I thinks its entirely my problem. I could trawl through emails, but most he told me it worked and I expect it died whilst bouncing around my cardboard box of "GS bits".
I assume that the bulb and box thing can be replaced separately, but how do I know which isn't doing the right thing
Any help appreciated, becuase the dark nights are coming.

I had similar thing happen to one of mine.

It turned out that the lamp unit (bulb to most of you) had gone Class F.

New lamp, and everything was ticketyboo.

That being said, as I was running two units, I was able to swap lamps to establish that it wasn't the ballast unit that had decided to die.

Ye Gods, but it's made of aluminium foil!

No more letting the kids change a blown lamp!

On closer examination I assume the bulb shouldn't be broken in the middle?
I wonder if thats the problem
