Those of you who may recognise my name as an occasional contributor to this forum may or may not know that in May 2005 I had an accident at work that resulted in the loss of my right thumb. Fortunately, one of the Consultants at Morriston Hospital here in South Wales was on call, and he saved my index finger and, since May, has reconstructed my thumb using 'bits 'n pieces' of me'! It has come to the stage now where I actually have a (very) small amount of function with it, which, hopefully, will improve over the next year or two. I have had 4 operations on it to date with a further 2 to come this year.

You can imagine that this has had quite an effect on my riding! One problem I have had was getting gloves to fit my hand. I had one 'modified' and while it allowed me to ride, it still left something to be desired. I tried various British suppliers, but one well know manufacturer wanted 'upwards of £380' to make me a pair.

This was when I heard of Held, the German company. I contacted them before Christmas and they pointed me towards Keith Blair, their UK distributor. I visited him at his home/office before Christmas where he measured my hand for a pair of hand made, made to measure gloves. My hand was so badly damaged that Keith wasn't satisfied that he had accurate measurements, so his wife suggested making a plaster cast of it. I did this and the resulting cast was sent via Keith, to Held in Germany along with the measurements that Keith took.

Well today, they arrived!!! A fabulous pair of Held Profi gloves!!! They are gorgeous and they fit, well, like a glove!!! All this for just 30% over the catalogue price of £94.00. They are absolutely wonderful!!! They also threw in a pair of waterproof outer gloves for free!

I have been riding for 3 months now and I'm looking forward to doing a lot more miles in the coming years. Held do a made to measure service on several types of their gloves for anyone who would like this bespoke service. I have no connection with either Held or Keith Blair other than as a very satisfied customer. I'll post some pictures of the gloves if required.

Well done Mike and top marks to Held.

It's sad that a British Company couldn't help for a reasonable price though.

Andy

PS Piccys would be nice.

:)

Thats top service...works both ways for them. They get you into made to measure gloves...theirs of course, which helps you stay on a bike, and they have a damn good iea that you'll sing their praises...quite rightly so...and maybe get other customers for them, as well as return custom from your good self. Good business all round.
Thought i was being a tad 'gory' wanting to see [ics...not the before and after ones...just how it is now re the glove fit etc. I imagine they've put more than 30% extra work into making them...your gain of course.
Great news indeed.
All the best

Great news Mike, bet your well pleased. Remember you telling me about Held making you some gloves, sounds like excellant customer service.

No excuses to get out and about now :D :thumb

Damn right Neil!!! The day I came up to you for the service, the only gloves I could get on were a pair of Knox Cold Killer undergloves and if it wasn't for having a pair of your handlebar mitts on, I'd never have managed the 410 mile round trip. I actually had blisters on my "thumb" when I got home which took 6 weeks to heal and a bollocking from the hospital!!!!
Anyway, onwards and upwards! Here's a pic of my gloves, all Pittards leather, kangaroo skin and Kevlar with beautiful workmanship! :thumb

Well Done

First of all well done, most people would have given up, a brave man. :clap :clap :clap

The gloves look the Dogs so Dars :thumb :thumb , I have problems with my span, wreck most gloves by spliting them :spitfire , so i think I'll treat myself to a pair of hand made ones.

Could you PM me the details of how to get these.

Enjoy you're riding, might see you at the Hog Raost in July.

Wolfman.

PS Steptoe's servicing must be majic to ride 410 miles :D :D

Hi Wolfman, I have PMed you with the details. Give Keith a ring and discuss your requirements with him.
As for Steptoe's servicing, yes, it was definitely worth the ride on the coldest, (maybe) and wettest, (definitely!!!!) day of 2005! His hospitality suite is a little cramped and needs a lick of paint and the coffee machine didn't appear to be working on the day I was there, but, boy! does my bike run sweeter now!!!!! And he's a nice bloke too! :thumb

That's fantastic news Mike!

I've always thought Held as an excellent company, and i think they make gloves under BMW trademark as well, right(?)

I'm thinking about getting proper Held gloves meself as well. My old ones are wrekked after the crash, and they weren't german quality stuff (they were Sinisalo). Those Held Profi gloves look good to me for weathers like we have here. :thumb

Ride safe, Margus :beerjug:

Hi Margus, you may well be correct about Held making gloves for BMW. Some of their all weather/winter gloves look very similar to some Hein Gericke kit too. :thumb

Held are the dogs danglies.

I have Akira-Tex for Winter and Phantom for summer. Excellant fit and finish. Customer service from Held in Germany is first class.

Prices in the UK are generally £=€ so I buy from a retailer in Germany.

New gloves..

Hi Longdog, :thumb

A really uplifting story all round. Congratulations to both you and Held.
Well done!

:clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap

Well done Held. Customer satisfaction is important.
Forgive me Longdog, this is not meant to be a hi-jack, but can anyone see where the actual prices of their products are on their website?
Anyone any experience of their jackets?

Excellant German retailer;

http://www.louis.de/

tend to charge full retail though.

I buy all mine through: [email protected]

asking for special prices gets discount. I have bought several pairs of gloves, thermals and tank bags from them. Service is always excellant and German shipping surprisingingly low

No problem. I have a catalogue, so if you can't find any prices, give me the catalogue number and I'll see if it's in there. :thumb

Thanks for that Mike. Discovered a place called "Motobrio" (and they have a website: www.motobrio.com) in a village called Yetholm, just outside Kelso, not 20 miles from here, and they actually sell the Held stuff. So I'm going to take a gander in the next couple of weeks - after I've found out how much the bike repairs are - and make a comparison with HG in Edinburgh. Thanks for the offer, Chuck.
