My R100GS tale of woe

Post 116

On the front of the engine theres a cylinder with two holes in it ?

Whats it for ???

I suppose that you didn't have the gearbox vapour blasted as you would have had to dismantle it - maybe get it soda blasted as I believe that can be done without dismantling the box ....... is that correct?

I personally would never vapour blast without dismantling,it has a knack of finding its way in through seals etc.
Soda blasting is fairly gentle and leaves a different finish so the box would stand out even more

I know it's easy to say when I'm not the one paying, but it's looking great already; that's going to be a really lovely bike soon. :thumb2

Looking great Mike, I'm sick that I didn't get over this afternoon, totally underestimated how long it would take to ride a 125 scoot across country, then I missed the turn off the 6006, went into MM, did the left turn by Lidl but must have ridden right by the village, next I knew I was on the road to Grantham. Didn't expect you to be working that late!

As everything else is looking so good, it looks like there's been a problem with the gearbox and it's been replaced with a non-rebuilt used one!
Come on Mike, gearbox out, strip and clean to match the rest! :D
The first question everyone who sees the bike will ask is 'Why didn't you have the gearbox blasted?'

To be fair to Mike, the limitation is the depth of my pockets. Mike could no doubt produce something that would look as if it just left the factory, but someone has to pay for it, and I'm at the limit of what I'm comfortable with at the moment. There will be many other bits to sort out, wheels and brakes for one. And on the subject of brakes, what will be my best option for improved braking, bigger disk? Maybe an better front end entirely, which would cover suspension and improved braking. Could be a return visit to Mike for that another time. John

Following this thread with interest. Thanks for posting Gadget especially in the circumstances although that does add to the story. Amazing what a difference when it's in the hands of someone who knows what he's doing. Can't wait till it's finished.

Couldn't have put it better.. :thumb

The gearbox is supposedly a motorworks exchange unit, which given the dateline of the bike would mean Steve scrimm built it.
It has been previously blasted but has a bit of weathering as you can see.
At the end of the day a year or so from now you won't really notice it
Off course we could pull it down and blast the casings but this will add more expense to an already sizeable project.
That's not to say it's not bugging me:blast

But its not YOURS Mike!:D

Fair enough if you have to strip the engine for repairs, you may as well get the cases blasted but I think there is a riisk of making these things too new. As Mikeyboy says (assuming the bike gets used) then all the casings will show some signs of weathering soon enough. Rust is the biggest bugbear in my view - powder coating all the steel parts and good quality plated or stainless fasteners put an end to that.

the gearbox will be noticeable

The wheels will be more noticeable, until I get them sorted!

Sorry to piss on your thread but it's not a tale of woe any more. It seems to be turning out quite well. JJH
