My R1150GS Won't Start. Local (Non-BMW) Bike Shop Struggling To Diagnose - Options?

That suggest that at least the starter button/kill switch are working correctly.

The next check is that the spark is arriving at the correct time, and that fuel is being injected, if that is happening all you are left with is compression testing and if required doing the valve clearances.

The first port of call would be replacing spark plugs, and ensuring there's a good spark, if not look at the coil and leads, as he has ruled out the hes.

From there, check that there is fuel flowing to the injectors.

Has he used any diagnostic tools like a gs-911?

As for payment, a thorny one.

They haven't resolved the issue, and I don't understand why they'd swap starters, unless there was an additional issue too ?

I would have thought two hours labour would be enough to diagnose the general problem and then perhaps another two hours to identify/fix the specific area.

To add to this, if you disconnect one of the fuel injectors, does it squirt fuel when you turn over the bike? If not, has a hose disconnected in the tank? Or possibly, is the fuel filter completely blocked?

If the bike is a twin spark, the should fire even if the primary ht leads are dead. I might be wrong there. Does it have a spark? Anyway, my offer is still open but the clocks a ticking!

Unfortunately it’s not going to work out but I think mark is going to be ok.

This was my first thought - a friend of mine broke down a few years ago with this problem.

Has the Tank been off

Hi from experience on 1150 -if the tank has been off and the fuel lines under the tank are connected back on the wrong way round then it will turn but not start( no fuel) - thats what mine did -dead dead dead simple to fix - swop them round. I am no mechanic mind -but i think this is another well known amateur error on putting the tank back on etc .

Dealer is looking after me on price - symbiotic relationship. To this end, he's been working on my bike between other work he can charge normally for. So that end of things is a weight off.

But he can't guarantee success before departure date.

Smelly Old Boots' generous offer won't work out - me & Adam are off to Scotland straight from Leenane, and Owen can't be without his bike for that long. But what an offer... :bow

So I've been hitting Dungdeal...

Viewing something promising tomorrow evening. Buying an alternative bike for the trip could actually solve a couple of other bits & pieces for me.

Feeling better now.

Dub 24 - I'll call you later, as the options we discussed may still be on the cards, though not now as urgently.

Many thanks all. :beerjug:

Fuel connector

When my 1150 died one morning, I found that one of the fuel connectors hadn't fully seated - not gone in with a click - and while appearing to be connected was loose. Pushing the connector home correctly cured the breakdown.

Well, Saturday night, at this point I hope we are all either fed or to be fed!

Greetings from Estepona. Sport the bike load didn’t work out mark. Hope you are on two wheels none the less

I bought an alternative for Leenane/Scotland on Sahurdeh. I'll collect my un-sorted GS from the shop when I get back, and I'll call on the offers of help from the kind folk on here to get it sorted. :beerjug:

I'm not a man to believe in fate, but I've enjoyed a good dollop of serendipity in the last week, despite woes with the GS.

- I found an alternative bike which I'm very excited about, and in all likelihood - if I can make it work out - could also become a keeper (along with my GS). I even got an appointment for Friday morning to register/VRT it en route to Leenane.

- My band played a great gig on Sahurdeh night at the road racing in Skerries. Met a lovely couple from Oz who've been on the road for three years on a Super Tenere who loved the gig.

- I met a girl at the gig. A girl I've fancied for years. I got the vibe she likes me too. Asked me out for coffee.

Everything's coming up PhaedrusMC...

Good times.

2007 XT660...

A third of the horsepower of Adam's S10, half its torque, 70kg lighter...

Surprisingly satisfying to ride, particularly after inflating the tyres from the previous owner's 17psi front & rear to the correct 29 front & 33 rear.

Came already loaded with TET-type accessories...
