Handlebars that is, not my local watering hole. I hate the mini ape hanger bars on my Road King. So sitting on various years and versions of Road Kings I found the ones on a 2013 CVO seemed pretty nice unfortunately they are over $400 just for the bars and since they are 1 1/4" I'd need new risers and top clamp! Low and behold I find take-off bars in a classified for $150 shipped so I buy them. Next back to the dealer to order the risers and top clamp. Although they look like they should cost $50 it comes to $175. No matter I do need them so they come in in a few days.

Next it's taking the old bars off which naturally involves removing the controls along with wiring through the bars for heated grips and TBW. I struggle along and finally get the CVO bars on along with the controls. Interesting that 1 1/4" bars reduce down to 1" on the ends so the standard controls and grips fit. The next snag is the top clamp cover, that shiny chrome thing, won't fit now. Comparing the parts diagram of my RK to a 2013 CVO shows the cover is indeed different and also the long thin chrome piece that attaches to the front of said cover which covers the top headlight nacelle joint is a different part number too. What the hell I'm already into this thing what's another $75 or so? Of course these two little parts turn out to be almost $200! I need them nevertheless so out comes the credit card again and a few days later they arrive. I then discover that while the new cover does fit nicely over the risers it is 3/8" short of reaching the nacelle! Good God how than that be? Back to the parts fiche and wouldn't you know it the two nacelle halves themselves are different part numbers than my 15 RK. I didn't even bother pricing those damn things plus even if I bought them lord knows what else wouldn't fit. Sometimes it's just best to walk away so I leave the thing and go into the house where "precious" confronts me. "It's about all the Harley parts charges I'm seeing on our credit card statement...." I just glare at her and walk past and pour a glass of bourbon, she gets the hint I'm in a very pissy mood and scurries off. I just sit there thinking about how the bars on the previous Electra Glide were perfect, they may not look the greatest on a RK but they're probably only $75 and I know I'll like the position.

So Monday it's back to the dealer to order stock bars for a 2009 EG and low and behold they're only $90 but they have to be paid for when ordering and I only have $80 in my wallet. With the wifey being the family accountant no way I'm putting them on my card so I tell him I'll be back next time I'm in the area. Here's where Clifton's luck takes a change, yesterday I get a call from one of the cuties at said Harley dealer inviting me to their "customer appreciation party" Saturday evening where they serve food and spirits and offer 20% off on parts and accessories. So my friends, tomorrow evening I will order the bars and attempt to eat and drink an amount of how much I spent on trying to mount those stupid CVO bars.

What you actually need here is a little slush fund away from prying eyes. (wifey)

;)

Well if you happen to find a pre-Rushmore RK you're welcome to the mini-apes that came on mine for free. Actually shipping would cost more than they're worth. They aren't bad for an hour or two but my lower back really tires if much longer than that. I was determined to "adapt to the bike" but riding to Arizona earlier this year I knew I was in trouble by Kentucky, thankfully I brought along a back rest which helped somewhat.

Yes I have a motorcycle cookie jar so to speak but sometimes cash is cumbersome to use when ordering things. I always use it when buying and selling bikes though because the less she knows the better. :D

I feel that the wife needs replacing.

LOL I've thought about that att but I can't imagine finding another one that'd tolerate me!

A simple cash cookie jar just won't cut it these days.

A totally separate financial identity is required, bank , debit card, secure address, cell phone. No online transactions between the two financial identities, do not allow the two cell phones to be together, ever ! even if switched off. They'll spot that, only use public transport for the second identity, never ever travel in your own registered vehicle with the second cell phone, they'll spot that too.

Don't ever give out your zip code or cell number when purchasing things, they'll tell you they have to have it. They don't, it's a lie.
Get a po box for mail.
Do not enter a shop with your cell phone switched on, switch it off and hide it somewhere, then go shopping.

Just think about what your doing and who is watching, have a look round for anyone eyeballing you, eyeball them back and check the reaction.Look for parked vehicles with people in, what are they doing ? Why are they there ?
Keep the exits in sight, always carry sunglasses. they can be placed on the table facing towards yourself, the dark glass will let you see whats going on behind you.

All this will be wasted on you though, as soon as you get a spare five hundred bucks you'll be down the harley dealer buying tat.:D;)

Be careful out there. :rob

LOL see, Bez if I had "accounts" I'd need to take all the precautionary steps you mention but being old fashion, as well as old, I don't have any accounts. Well other than my one credit card which statement goes to the wifey (along with hers). My credit card is pretty much used for orders, booking motels, gasoline at the pump, along with grocery store purchases. Conveniently my wine and liquor purchases are made at the grocery store (along with some food). :D

My main financial instrument is the cookie jar which even I am able to manage. The wifey knows of it but doesn't know where it is or what's in it (I'm sure she has one as well). If it's empty I sell a motorcycle or another toy, if it's full I buy something. I sold two items yesterday (to my friend the preacher) which proceeds went in, and there's the 07 Honda 919 for sale but it likely won't sell 'til Spring. On the radar to buy is a small dual sport motorcycle and winter's the time to buy so I need to start searching.

For today though it's the VIB (Very Important Biker party) to order FLHT bars and gorge myself with a platter full of their little mini-sandwiches, meatballs, veggies and beverages!

So I order the bars, drink 2 cans of Bud light, have one sandwich then, since everything was 20-30% off, end up buying an air filter, oil filter, and stupid shirt. Good turn out though with lots of people milling around with shopping bags and two bikes sold while I was there.

Make sure the next bike isn't a Harley? Find a manufacturer where parts are more interchangeable.:)

Actually parts are very interchangeable across Harley's Touring line it's just I tried to use 1 1/4" CVO RK bars and clamps which are one of the few that don't work without changing lots of other parts. The bars on my previous EG were perfect so I'm assuming they'll feel as good on a RK, fingers crossed.
