My review of the 14 Ducati Multistrada vs 15 BMW R1200 GS

GILES.....post 34

Absolutely spot on with the summary of the GS WC....In many ways a very good motorcycle but a long way from being great.

Twin cam was a much better all-round bike. Not as fast on paper and didn't 'feel' as fast on the road. In the real world there's no way a wc is going to leave a tc in it's wake.

As Giles rightly pointed out, the light flywheel allows the engine to spin up much more readily giving that feeling you're riding a quick bike.

Maybe you and Giles (and a few more here ) should ride the 2015 GS, as there are several big differences since the bike was launched in 2013.

As we all know, it takes BMW a year or two to iron out most of the bugs on a new model, and it appears that they have now (bar one or two isolated problems, which you will get on ANY bike of ANY year).:thumb

Different strokes for different folks but damn that Ducati Multistrada front end is ugly. If the designer was going for a cartoon looking bird face with big beady eyes and a beak with massive nostrils then congrats - mission accomplished!

Forget shaft drives/chains/off roading - why can't BMW do colours like this :drool

i think you're wrong there. i believe the WC has a speed advantage that the TC can't make up. it might be the better bike though :nenau

quite.

they seem in love with boring semi matt finishes more suited to the wall of a public toilet. WC, coincidence?

Playing devils advocate, why should someone who has splurged 15K on a 2013 or 2014 bike, that supposedly had a million miles of testing, be expected to put up with things like sub standard switch gear, heated grips that "don't" and the other common gripes. Should someone who want's their heated grips to actually provide a level of heat part exchange their bike for a 2015 model because of what appears to be bloody mindedness on the part of BMW? (Didn't you yourself have a 2013 bike with a bent or misaligned frame?)

It's easy to accept the changes to the heavier flywheel as an evolution of the model (As all models evolve), but the other niggles, major in some cases, minor in others, should either not be present on what is supposedly a premium product, and if found to be present and a genuine issue, should be sorted properly to the satisfaction of the customer.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I think Giles post is bang on the money, and they really don't make them like they used to :)

PS, I'm actually reasonably happy with mine, even though it's the second set of switchgear that's now failed and it's waiting to go back in to the dealer.

Has the gearbox/clutch problem now been fully sorted?

I've had no Gearbox / Clutch problems on my 2014 Model Year bike, it's not smooth by a long shot and annoyingly the clutch bite point seems to move around. I've had both side's switch gear fail, Nav 5 Cradle fail (Nav worked but would not recognise the Nav V as compatible), Heated grips are truly pathetic (see the other thread) and waiting to get the dealer on board to put a bit of pressure on BMW based on the findings from advrider and their input. I've also had a couple of strange issues were the ESA decided to do what I can only describe as stop responding, so had to power the bike off, give a it a minute and power it on, but no fault codes shown so it's getting brushed aside.

All in all I quite like mine, but it's got niggles I don't think should be there on a £14k+ purchase, maybe they ironed out the gearbox probs with the 2014 MY.

As I type my 13 plate GS is having a brand new engine fitted due to tiny spots of corrosion on the crankcase/head joint area. What I'd like to know is what major changes have happened to the engine since mine came off the production line in early 2013. Furthermore, will I now have a clutch that doesn't drag and a gearbox that won't sound like it's going to explode when selecting first gear.

Is it being replaced with the heavy flywheel engine?

All I know is a new engine was delivered to dealer last week and the guy I'm dealing with said its a 2015 engine so will have all the "tweaks"

I actually took 2 different 2014 model GS's out and 1 2014 GSA. Whilst in some respects they were a little nicer to ride than the 2013 model the difference was not enough to make me want to stay with the GS,especially when the dealer started talking in the region of £4,700 to swap.

All 3 still had a poor gearbox, I've ridden about 8 or 9 wc gs's and not one of them had a good gearbox, and no matter what folk on hear say about their gearboxes being fine I personally have come to think that their idea of a good gear change and mine must differ somewhat.

I have since swapping my 2013 gs, for a completely different make of bike, ridden a 2015 model gs, and to be honest it still did very little for me, but then again I'd be the first to admit that I'm a bit of a dinosaur, I don't have a mobile phone, I struggle with computers, basecamp leaves me completely flummoxed, so maybe the new GS's are just to far ahead of my abilities to be able to get the best from them, or maybe I'm just at a stage in life where I just want to get on my bike and ride rather than being in constant debate with the dealer.

I'm happy that there seems to be many who are over the moon with their gs and long may their love of this machine continue.

I do however take a positive from the poor experience I had with my GS (my 30th boxer engine BMW by the way) and that positive is that the experience prompted me to look at something else, and that something else has become for me the best bike I've ever owned.

I still believe the GS is a fine motorcycle, but I know mine for me is a lot lot better.

Wot yer got now Steve ??
