My two week 5 country Euro trip 2024

Isn’t Western Europe a truly beautiful, civilised, place
Indeed. I keep saying to my wife that I am more and more tempted to move back to the continent. Want to go to Spain, just go, no mucking about with ferries, borders etc, just pack and go, which does appeal to me rather nicely.

Worked for us. We’re in Bavaria now

If you have an EU passport - bingo
Spain visa for non EU is that one should not leave the country for more than 10 months in 5 years during the process. Normally not a problem unless one has family elsewhere.

Just catching up on threads on a overcast, blustery West of Scotland morning and throughly enjoyed reading your updates. Actually just back from a (organised) Euro tour last Monday( 9th) and passed through/stayed in several of the same locations principally Innsbruck for a rest day and also to pick up the motor-rail to Dusseldorf last weekend ( pick this if you don't want to have nights sleep....) Was nice to be reminded of some of the sights but equally have to agree that Italy-which we passed through coming back from Slovenia- was hard work and a slog probably made worse by the fact it was on the weekend (Saturday)
Only my 2nd Euro trip, first being in 2022, but hope to manage more in the future. Will be bookmarking your thread for reference so many thanks for taking the time to record your trip.

SiRich, as a new owner of a Gs1300, how did you find the comfort of the bike on a long trip, I’ve read some reports that the high seat is the most comfortable, what have you on your bike?

Hi there Hut

My seat is the standard height one.

I am 6’1 and a bit, 34” in the leg, overall I find comfort of the bike very good, i was usually riding at least 5 hours daily and overall I didn't give comfort a second thought.

I had zero leg being cramped issues on the entire trip, and could ride with my visor up with no wind blast at all. Sometimes had a bit of arse ache after a few hours and wanted to stand up on the pegs or shuffle back on the seat.

I have no experience of one with a high seat, my neck was a bit tired after a few hours, so air was perhaps brushing the top of my lid. I guess a high seat could have made that worse.

Im at that age now where my bladder seems to be the lowest denominator, i was usually riding 2.5 hours between stops.

Overall the bike impressed me, the touratech zega pro luggage i bought from rugged roads was also brilliant and would highly recommend, depending how tall you are it may be worth trying a high seat if you can as the seat is not overly plush.

I can nicely flat foot on the bike, and would probably choose the same seat again.

I have just bought an ex demo 1300 Trophy, it came with the heated high seat and lowering suspension, however I’m only 5,8 and 29 inseam.
When the bike stops I can get both feet down but not quite flat footed, so in an ideal world the normal seat would be better but I can live with it at the moment as this bike is so well balanced.
I’m also the wrong side of 60 by a few years so I get what you mean with the comfort breaks😁.
My mate and I are travelling from just north of Edinburgh up to Oban next Friday for the weekend we have a hotel booked there, we will jump on the ferry across to Mull then take the top ferry from Tobermory to Kilchoan then back down through Stontain onto the Corran ferry, third ferry of the day then down to Oban for a few beers.
No plans for Sunday as yet.
I’m looking forward to a decent run on the bike to see how it suits my style, my mate has a 1200 GSA, so a walk in the park for him on his mobile sofa 😂.
It’s not a big Euro trip like yours but should be long enough to assess the bike for a possible Euro trip next year.

I have been to Oban and stayed over a few times over the years on the bike , I managed to write a bike off just outside there once on a huge diesel spill, 20 years ago now, that was where my shoulder problems started, but the op has done the trick for me.

IMO the 1300 is a great tourer, overall I found it very comfortable, and I was consistently getting over 200 miles from a tank no problem. It said it did 59mpg from the computer over the trip, it has a lot of reserve poke on tap if you need it. I do not have the suspension lowering option. Not sure if you have the radar cruise option but Im a big fan of it now having had a proper chance to use. It is worth having a bit of a play in the menus just to get to grips with the options etc in there, something I hadn't done. I was scrolling through all sorts of info on one button mpg.tyre pressures. rest time/speed av - later I found I could remove most of them and just get the stuff I wanted range left /tank level/mpg.

Have a great trip!

On the back of this trip I am struggling to recommend italy as the routes ive taken seem full of 50km speed limits, and 30km speed limits though created environmental zones, and absolutely full of speed cameras.
I absolutely agree with you on that point. I was away at about the same time as you, travelled over alone then I picked my wife up at Verona airport. We road on rural roads to Misano Adriatico for a holiday and the MotoGP round but on the return trip up to Riva Del Garda we used the Autostrada, I think it cost about €24. I had thought about doing a trip around Italy in the next year or so but the speed limits and cameras have put me off.
