Right-hand-side on the gearbox just behind the spilt with the engine - my 2005 1200GS has two 'sticky out' tabs about 3/4" long and a couple of inches apart.
These are not on a 2004 1200GS that I was looking at on Tuesday night.

What are they for?
Why does my bike have them and the 2004 model not?

I assume that they make my bike go faster, run smoother, use less petrol or make it more reliable then the 2004 model?

Are they locating tabs for use during the build? I think I remember seeing someone report damage to one somewhere and it was concluded it has no obvious purpose (a bit like myself).

Could be - in which case I'd better saw them off to reduce weight!

Were from 05 on, used to help seperate the gearbox from the engine leaverage points

Was hoping for a more exciting explanation -but this sounds the most convincing - oh well.
