Nürburgring Bans Motorcycles from Tourist Days

I'm dropping past while on a tour towards the end of May. Is there anywhere decent for a few pics and a good view of the track?
 
Cars & bikes on the track at the same time is a really bad idea. Just a shame the bikes lose out. They could do separate days or sessions.

They did try that some years ago...bike only evening session. Simply not enough bikes for them to keep their coffers full. The place has lost its way..the real reason behind Tourist Driving....
 
A bit of a big crash during 'Tourist Driving' yesterday. Both drivers OK. UK regd BMW M2 appears to have moved slightly to their left...and collected an overtaking GT3RS (992...so perhaps £200k car)
Quite whether the M2 driver has insurance to cover such an eventuality.........

I think on my bike insurance there was a specific bit about the ring and being non insured...
Probably on the car aswell..
Wouldn't worry me as I would have had no intention of doing a lap..

Same here. I think all of my insurance policies (4) have a clause which specifically excludes cover on the Ring.

That’s not going to buff out!

I’m pretty sure that no insurance companies cover the ring as standard - certainly none of mine do although one covers specific track days with a £5k excess, so unless they’ve bought a separate package that’s an expensive day out for both of them. A crash taking out 10m of Armco and closing the track for 30 min would be somewhere around £5k
 
I've never found a 'general insurance' that covers you for Nurburgring.

Only specific specialist track insurance with high excess.

I think both car drivers are probably financially ruined... not to mention track damage, track repairs, track compensation...

Sued for publishing the crash, no camera's allowed, Nurburgring reputation damage etc...
 
But still hundreds of British people of all ages go over and do 'just a few laps'. The speeds have increased massively in recent years and when you look at what power/speed you can buy for small money...and then go duelling with the big boys in their GT3s......Utter madness when you can rent a half decently set up car for 4 all inclusive laps for c £500.

On many standard UK policies, there was a general exclusion around, track days, racing, pace making and stuff like that. There was sometimes (not always) an additional and specific exclusion of the ‘ring.

Then things changed, and a wider exclusion came in, naming the ‘ring specifically and other circumstances.

Before the wider exclusion came in, it was taken that the ‘ring (as it was not specifically excluded) was covered.

When I went there in 2005 & 2007 it was generally considered a public toll road (not a closed circuit track).

Insurance still would not cover you if you had an accident on it though... you were on your own.

I remember a guy who bought a brand new Vauxhall Astra Nurburgring Edition... (limited to 835 cars to represent its lap time 8:35)... then crashed and rolled it on his first day there.

Lost the lot. Plus track repairs, Air Ambulance, car repatriation... all sorts.

I think it cost him around £35,000 that day, in all.

It still is a one way toll road under German road traffic legislation (with at least 2 sections with speed limits and signs to say so)
For the 10yrs + between 2008/9 to the end of 2020 what appeared to happen was that because it was a public road, and under EU law, your UK insurance was legally obliged to cover (despite the small print saying the Nurburgring Nordschleife was excluded) but that said Ins co would then come to you for their money back...for your breach of contract.
