Naive question re dvd writer/reader thingy

My internal dvd writer/burner/reader thingy has recently ceased to work, or at least burn discs. !!!
Basically, it plays my music discs ok, or any discs that were pre burned by myself (mostly photgraphs).
However, I have recently burnt a lot of pictures onto a disc and whilst the software runs thru its Burning procedure(s), then tells me the burning is complete etc, there is nothing at all on the disc when i take a look at it !!!!!!!!

Is the writer knackered, and how do I confirm, before I buy another ????????????

It would help if you told us a little about your computer. Do you use a Mac or a pc? If you use a pc, do you run Linux or Windows, and what version?. Assuming you run Windows then try starting Device Manager from Control Panel (how you do it depends on your version of Windows) then right-click on the dvd-drive and select Uninstall. Restart the computer and see if that sorts the problem. If not, new drives are not expensive if you know how to install them yourself. Be aware that there are two ways to connect a drive. IDE/EIDE is the old way using a 34-way ribbon cable and SATA is the current fashion using some sort of serial cable that I've never seen but someone more knowledgable could easily describe to you. The two are incompatible so take the old drive with you when you go to buy its replacement.

Im using windows XP. For the sake of a few pounds, yes, I could install a new device and yes, i have seen different types of connection (Ide/Eide/Sata) etc.
Another anomally I have noticed is that even with new discs being inputted into the device, it sometimes shows that the disc is full of data.
Mmm, time to spend some greenbacks me thinks ??????????????!!!!!!!!!
