Naive question re iphone 4s

Today, a friend sent me 4 emails with some big files attached to them (somewhere near 35MB in total).

I used my iphone to download and look at the files (mountain scenery pics from the weekend ) and my phone has used some of my providers data.

Is that normal ?? (Ive done nothing else with the phone today and certainly havent used the web on it)

If you were not connected via WiFi then yes, you'd need a 3G connection and emails are data.
