NAV 2 - Screen

I had an SP3 and nothing went wrong with the screen. I have purchased a Nav 2 and twice the same thing has happened.

When riding early in the morning or late evening and the sun is shining directly onto the screen for a long time at right angles (This is when it seems to happen) a form of 'moisture' appears in the centre of the screen making it very difficult to read.

It happened a lot with my first Nav 2 and i had it returned. The new one which I have now had for nearly 2 months has worked fine until today when the same thing has happened. I was riding west early today and the sun was for a long time shining directly onto the screen. A patch of moisture about half inch by 2 inches appeared across the screen making it impossible to see the detail in sunlight. In shadow there was not a problem.

I stopped and put my gloves over the screen and after about 10 minutes the patch of 'moisture' was much smaller. I then rode on and the clouds came over and the patch of moisture disappeared completely.

Riding back the sun came out again but much higher - and warmer - and the patch did not return. Riding along a motorway I put the screen towards the sun to see if that would do anything to bring it back. It did not.

Is this type of thing a fault with the machine or have I just been unlucky with two faulty machines? Does it revolve around temperature or direct sunlight or both.

Should i get the machine replaced yet again?

I've only had mine a couple of weeks (BMW had thirty+ on back order for ages, made me wonder if there was a quality issue and they were stalling!), first day same thing as you describe. It was mounted on the standard bar mount, rode about 20 miles in strong sunlight a milky streak was in the middle of the screen. As it was straight out of the box I wondered whether it was some residual moisture from storage or something. It hasn't returned since but I will be keeping an eye on it.

I take it that your first Nav never lost this problem?

Could be the where its positioned. I haven't experenced this problem, however mine is situated above the clocks but still gives a clear view ahead.

Thanks Dutch found it HERE

Thanks...............

BTW, do you set the screen brightness to 'Automatic' or adjust manually?

Judging by your photo, it's much brighter than mine.......

Cheers

HG,

Do you leave the Nav 2 on the bike overnight, or is it kept in the warm?

Bikes garaged at night so it stops on the bike, however always take it off if leaving it outside. To many light fingered swines around nowdays.

Brightness is set to Auto its probably just the contrast between inside my garage and the outside.

It sounds like condensation. I'm sure I've had the same problem on my SPIII. Try keeping it indoors overnight.

I keep mine on the bike in the garage overnight. I wrapped it up though

I will bring it indoors and see if that cures the problem.

I agree with the comment made by Chasr that it sounds like condensation inside the unit.

I have had two different 2650's for the past year, never encountered this problem, but perhaps somehow your GPSR may have got a little bit of moisture in it.

My suggestion: Take it inside, open the CF card door, take the CF card out, then put the GPSR in a warm, dry environment (perhaps sitting on a window ledge, in the sunshine) for a day or two, and leave it there, with the CF card door open and the screen facing down. Hopefully whatever moisture is inside the unit will evaporate and depart out the open CF card door. If you really want to do a first-class job, somehow support the GPSR up off the surface of the window ledge so that air can circulate all around it, and warm up the screen as well as the body of the GPSR. Keep in mind that heat (and, hopefully, moisture along with it) rises.

My guess is that this will dry the thing out and fix your problem. You could, if you want, take the back cover off of it (it is held together with half a dozen screws) and leave it split in two, but I don't think this should be necessary.

I am thinking about positionning my GPS in the same scottish way ! Does it vibrate at high speed ? Is it in contact with the shield ?

It is precisely because you wrap it up that you are getting condensation inside the unit. Do not wrap it up! You can leave it outdoors, mounted on the moto, for weeks at a time during a tropical monsoon, and it will remain dry as a nun's fart inside, but if you wrap it up (seal it in a bag) for just one 12 hour overnight temperature cycle, you will cause condensation inside the GPSR.

By wrapping it up, you are causing the moisture problem, not preventing it from happening.

Note also that you can unintentionally cause the very same problem of condensation inside the unit if you leave the GPSR in a watertight container - such as a pannier - overnight. If you are camping, keep it in your tent, loosly wrapped in clean dry clothing. If you are staying in a hotel, bring it inside or leave it outside mounted on the moto (unwrapped), but don't stash it in the pannier overnight.

If you must store it in a sealed container that will be exposed to any daily temperature variations, get a dessicant bag from a camera shop and keep the dessicant bag in the container with the GPSR. You can 'refresh' (recycle) the dessicant bag by leaving it on a warm dry surface, such as the top of your television or computer monitor, for a day or two.

Thanks for the advice which I have followed. The moisture inside the screen has not returned but then again I have not driven it with the sun shining directly on it for a period of time.

I did 500 miles with it over the weekend and we travelled through some very heavy storms without any problem.

I am now bringing it indoors on a night with the memory door open.

I will let you know how things develop
