I have to (usually) manually switch on nav 5 for it to power up; doesn't usually power up in the cradle when ignition is switched on.

I've cleaned the contacts etc. Any ideas before I book in with dealer?

Thanks

Weird, not heard of that one, what software have you got loaded? Long shot I know but if you've cleaned the contact faces (both sides?) I can't think of anything else that may cause this to happen, unlikely to be a battery fault...

Electrics is a magic to me though... :-?

Is it a brand new unit, or has it been working?

This happened to me in France last year. Try a hard reset, depress the power button for at least 10 seconds. Give it a go, nothing to loose.

When the battery on my Nav is really depleted from sitting on the shelf more than a month, it can take a few minutes to boot up in the cradle, presumably it has to charge a bit first. Maybe you have a bad battery?

I had to ride around for around 15 mins with it in cradle before it came to life, it had sat on shelf for 4 cold weeks in garage before that. No probs since.

Mine did this last Friday, bikes been stood a few weeks, turned it on, struck it up and no nav just blank, removed it and refitted it, still blank, swore, still blank, swore again, but still blank. I then road off to Seaways biker cafe 50 miles, nav remained blank all the way, got to cafe, turned off ignition and nav came on. Since then it's been fine.:nenau

Maybe it's internal battery was flat?

Same problem

Something similar happened to me. Visited a friend about 15 miles way every thing was working fine, stayed for a brew and came out 40 minutes later, started the bike, sat nav not working, stopped, switched the bike off and on again still nothing, Took the sat nav out of the mount tried to switch it on manually, no joy. Refitted it to the bike and rode home. Tried again when I got back but it just would not power up.

So booked it into my local dealer (still under warranty). Two days later set off to the dealers still no sat nav, halfway there it came on.

Because it was working when I got there the guys in the workshop could find no fault. When I got home I did update it to the latest maps and I think some additional software was installed as well.

It's been working about a month now, though not many miles because of bad weather here.

We are due to go to Spain and Portugal in June for 3 weeks and I must admit I'm a little worried after hearing other people are having the same problem.

so - this morning started it manually, rode to work (25 miles, about an hour). Switched bike off, turned ignition back on, sat nav started up fine. got back on bike this evening - nothing...... rode home and never came on. is an hour's riding long enough to charge it properly?

I would have thought that the internal battery should hold it's charge for quite some time, my bike is not ridden everyday, some times it's left for a couple of weeks and until last month I had not had any trouble.

When it started working on the way to the dealers the battery strength indicator was showing green.

What was your showing?

I swapped to a nav 5 last year, and it started doing similar things and running flat in a few days, and not powering up or charging on bike, sometimes,,
I realised when using it off bike the power button must be held in until the shutdown message appears, as i was leaving it in standby with a quick press it was running the battery down, its been ok since,

Battery is showing fully charged

It's been on on my desk for about an hour and not gone down, so unit seems fine - looks like a problem with the cradle

Have you checked that the cradle has power? I'm assuming that this is a BMW fitted cradle if you cant check it maybe get the dealer check it, at least that would eliminate it.

From what I am reading the cradle is a prime suspect.

Well that was the kiss of death,

Out riding on Sunday and the sat nav would not switch on again. We were only a few miles from Bowker Motorrad in Preston (my local dealers) so went straight there. It was still off when we arrived, it was taken off the bike and still would not power up. The team were just going through the warranty form when it powered up all by itself. They still gave me the new unit so that was a great result for me.
How are you doing xantamisch ? Is it still misbehaving?

If it is the same as a 660 try opening the battery door and putting a thin piece of foam between the battery and door, had a similar problem with my 660 and it was the battery moving against the internal contacts and not charging properly

Foam keeps the battery more secure.

Have you tried unplugging the battery, it may re set it, i recall a post a while ago with similar issues, that was the fix,

Sorry to say hadn't used my bike for a couple of months. It's been on optimiser charge with the nav v in its cradle. Switched on on Sunday no nav v, would not start up until I turned the key in the cradle from lock to unlock and back. Then it fired up and worked fine since. Can't say for sure if there is a connection between my actions and the nav v starting but posted FYI.

The issue seems to be the nav 5 has to have some charge to recognise the bike,
Charging off bike to full restored the functions on mine,
It doesnt fully power off if left on bike,,
the power button held down to turn off message is needed for long periods,
Not totally happy with the battery life on mine, its a 2014 manufacture bought 2016,
