Just learning about my new sat nav. Never had Garmin before. I see it has some apps. Looking for suggestions for good apps, also how do you load them? Can any app be put on it? What size memory card does it take?
Thanks all advice much appreciated
I have it made readable for you.

The apps are things that you load on your phone onto which you have also loaded the BMW and Garmin and maybe TomTom apps and apps like MyRoute and Scenic and weather and music and stuff like that these apps then talk to your fancy dash board screen thing which talks to your GPS device which all talk to your helmet and to your mates all this stuff gets very confusing and very often does not work which is why there is a special section for it as if the WC section was not special enough do I know why people like all these apps and communication and being joined up and entertained or confused no I do not but they do as the simple pleasure of riding a motorbike is just not enough

Thanks for answer folks sorry about punctuation thought I was on a bike forum must of got crossed with punctuation police site

The only "app" I have found that does everything I want it to is Garmins own Basecamp mapping program. A lot of people hate it but once you have all the settings and info you want stored in the program the system allows you to create waypoints / routes / tracks and also allows you to drag the route around to go down the roads you want to. it gives lots of info if used correctly and you set up set of time - expected stopover time average expected speed etc.
There are loads of to do guides on YouTube.

Heres the warnings though:
1. You will hate it and want to give up after hours of trying
2. You will persist with the search function - which is crap - and eventually do what the instruction vids show you (import coordinates for waypoints from Bing Maps or Google Maps)
3. If you get from A to B the quickest route every time you ride then let your Sat Nav do the calc - if you want to get there by a set route and ride the roads YOU want to ride then create the route on Basecamp and import it to the Nav
4. Make sure your settings for Toll Road use / Motorways / Fastest or shortest route etc are the same on your Basecamp to your Sat Nav.
5. If you ride with others using Basecamp to create routes they can share means anyone can download the free Basecamp software and upload the maps to their Nav (Garmin)

Basically you will find a lot to hate about Basecamp but i still havent found anything that can do all it can and that can interact with my route and the way I want to travel - there are plenty of A to B apps out there but I havent tried one yet that does everything I want it to. (However you will hear people talk about Mapsource being brilliant - which is the "old" money version of Basecamp).

You asked about storage - The answer really is up to you - do you need all Europe Maps or just portions of it. The more of complete Western Europe you have the more room you need (your Maps basically spill over and use the storage)
Also do you want Music from your Nav or your Phone etc etc.

Basically its cheap to add more storage and better to only buy once.

I use MyRouteApp and their Nav app. I is a paid for app. Any route you create can be sent to your Nav or phone, also they can be shared with friends, there is a library on line of routes you can download. Best of all it is very easy to use, unlike Basecamp which is horrible to use unless you like losing large amounts of your life shouting at your computer doing something that you could do in 15mins on your phone with MyRoute.

Ditto. Getting rid of my Sat Nav 5 now as it’s redundant.

and the bonus is its transferable between bikes and cars. My phone sits in a Quadlock case and it just gets transferred from one bike to another.

The rate at which reports are coming in of Quadlock-type mounts on boxers killing the camera on hi-spec phones because of the vibration levels (and such use invalidating phone warranties), even the Nav 6 will look like a bargain soon

On lower spec phones maybe but not sure I’d put my iPhone 11 or 12 to the test...

TMF had this very problem with his top end iPhone and now uses an older model instead specifically for that purpose. Something to do with the image stabilization on the latest phones not being able to cope I believe

Completely agree. And for that reason I use an old iPhone 7 Plus as my Nav phone. It’s loaded with Nav apps only such as calimoto, MyRoute and Waze on a data only sim. My nice iPhone 12 stays in my jacket pocket.

None of this is at all helpful to the OP, not least as he’s already bought his Navigator V.

1. Congratulations on now owning a Nav V GPS device, an excellent aid to getting you from A to B or even A to Z, via all the letters in between, along either roads of your choosing or roads that the device itself has selected for you.

2. You cannot load app’s onto the device per-se. What you can do is link the device to your phone (which can run many applications) and / or to your bike * and / or to any Bluetooth earphones you may own and / or to any associated bike-to-bike capability those earphones may have.

3. Which applications work best on your phone? Is really a question (as is the whole topic) for the GPS section or even the pub section. This section is exclusively for dealing with the technical aspects of water cooled GS motorcycles and, most importantly, which gloves match them best.

4. What sized SD card? Again, a question for the GPS section, which you have now - with some tongue in cheek prompting - discovered, I see. I also see that this question was then answered accurately in very short order. Ask your applications question there and you’ll get some more good answers. All you are getting here is, ā€œYou shouldn’t have bought a Nav V, mateā€ (it’s a bit late for that) and heaps of conflicting advice on what you should have done instead.... oh..... and help with matching gloves. Not least, in the GPS section, one member (Berin, a strong user of assorted devices, on and off road) has conducted a whole heap of reviews of applications and different hardware, in the end concluding that it was and is still very difficult to beat a proper GPS device.

You now own a proper GPS device; all you have to do now is learn how to use it fully and properly. The GPS section will help you with that, trust me.

As a bonus, the GPS section also has sub-sections on the challenges many bods face getting their all singing, all dancing, phone and mixed applications (like Kurviger, MyRoute, Scenic and the like) to perform just how they imagine (and have been told) they should. It is often not the plain sailing voyage some think
bods think it is.

* WC owners love this, as the device tells them all sorts of awesome cool stuff. For example, the VIN number, how often they have applied the brakes and the current (real time) voltage the alternator is kicking out. This is vital stuff, trust me. All there at the touch of a button, as you hoon to Tesco.

It seems that it is not high spec phones that have camera problems due to the vibration on a bike, but just Iphones. You can buy a very high spec Android phone and not have problems. If you have an Iphone then there is a good chance that you will have problems. Just because an iphone costs twice as much does not mean that it is as good as a £400 Android phone.

I tend to plan a route on the laptop using the Calimoto website then I import the waypoints or the route into the BMW connected app on the phone, everything works perfectly.

Another option for solving this issue is to simply stop pushing the buttons...
