Hi guys, My Nav 6 battery is not holding a charge and I can't find a replacement other than £65 from a stealer. Does anyone know of a suitable replacement, preferably with a higher Ah?
I have no problem soldering the original plug to a new battery given a suitable replacement.

Ring Garmin support - a replacement battery for the Nav6 - exactly the same as you get from the dealers - is £13.09 delivered. Just got one for my Nav6 recently.

Interestingly the same battery fits both Nav5 and Nav6

Thanks Hawkeye. When I leave the bike parked up for a few days, the battery is always very low or dead, I suspected a duff battery, but I have since read that unless you remove the satnav and turn it off, it stays on standby and drains he battery.
Can anyone confirm that this is the case?
Currently charging the battery but after six hours only half full, a possible indication of a poor battery?
Either way, a spare might be a good idea.

Yes that is the case Pete. I now always switch off my unit and remove and battery life is a lot better.
Sounds like your battery may def be stuffed though, even my old battery charged fully in a lot less time than yours currently is.

Thanks for that info, I've been needing a battery for a while. Process couldn't be easier tell them what you want, they check stock and then send an email for you to complete and pay for the order.

They are very cautious on the phone telling you that you shouldn't really be opening the the device to change the battery, he stopped with the cautions when I pointed out to him that when the unit was new I had to install the battery, and on the odd occasion when the device locks up, I have to disconnect the battery to reset it (this is why they provide a screwdriver to open the compartment!).
He did go on to say that it may not necessarily be the battery and I should consider getting it checked out, but I pointed out that at £13.09 it didn't matter if it wasn't the battery, but that I also know what the symptoms are of a battery not holding it's charge so, whilst there is a remote chance it could be something else, it is highly likely to be the battery.

So again, thanks for the info hawkeye. :thumb2

I now just need to sort out the battery in my Sena SRL Bluetooth unit, little use during lock-down appears to have killed it, I'm lucky if I get 2 hours use out of it. I had this apart yesterday, I ain't going to be replacing the battery in that, it's too fiddley. I may have to send it back to the importers, Feridax, to see if it can be repaired, if not, it'll be over £200 for a replacement!

New battery now ordered from Garmin, slightly cheaper than from the dealer!
Thanks for the help.

Wow Hawkeye : £13.09 bargain considering...... I shall order tomorrow because my 7 yr old Nav V is only holding charge for a few days and 'I'm tight as a ducks arse' so not willing to pay BMW cost.

Any ideas if its the same battery for the Zumo 590.

Ive just bought a new chinese one for 22 quid , be nice if I could get an original Garmin one for 13spondoolies!

It will be made by the same Chinese factory wherever you get it from. :D

No idea Popell, sorry. All it says on my invoice is BMW Nav 5/6. Guess the only way to find out may be to ring Garmin support, sorry.

Glad to have helped those that have ordered new batteries and saved you a few pennies for exactly the same item as sold by the dealers :thumb

My 8 yr old Nav V was regularly suffering a flat battery. I have also ordered a new one. This post epitomises one of the benefits of being a member of this forum.

sounds very much like they do stay on standby when you turn them "off". I've not used mine much but every time I go back to it, the b...y battery is flat. Never occurred to me that they were wilfully stupid. Should not need the battery removing (which IIRC requires a screwdriver)

thanks for the heads up of genuine batteries at 13 quid.

Well pleased with the service, ordered a little over 24 hours ago and I have now fitted it.

Old and new together:

New battery arrived very quickly, swapped it over and put it on charge. Does not appear to be charging off the bike! I'm starting to wonder if there is a problem with the satnav's charging circuit. I have tried different USB cables and chargers. Does anyone know how long it takes to show any sort of charge or had similar problems?
After a few hours, when I take it off charge, the symbol is in orange and showing 20% charge, which is what it was doing when I first fitted the new battery. When on charge I get the battery charge symbol.
Perhaps it will charge ok on the bike when the engine is going?
Now starting to wonder if there was anything wrong with the old battery!

I seem to recall in a previou post someone on here commenting that the Garmin battery voltage is 7.4 v and most phone type USB chargers only put out 5 v , so it never seem to fully charge on mains , however in the car or on the the bike the green battery symbol on the Nav goes to full very quickly.

Thats interesting, the battery of the 590 is defo not the same as its 3.7v, seems to charge ok from mains (as it would)

Micko123, how did I miss that one! Yes you are quite correct, the Garmin battery is 7.4v. I know enough about charging batteries to know that the charging voltage has to be higher than the battery voltage and as Micko123 quite rightly says, it's 5v.
A 12v lead acid battery ideal charging voltage is 13.6v for example, but if you don't have a voltage difference, little or no current will flow by my understanding.
Anyone interested in a good second hand battery?

I charged mine with the USB socket on a phone charger. You do need to switch the satnav on for it to charge, you'll see the lightening symbol on the battery level indicator to show it's charging. During charging the battery symbol is fully green so you don't know how the charge is progressing, to find out you will need to unplug the USB and the battery indicator will then show how far the battery has charged. it took about 5 hours to reach full charge I think. Mine did reach a full charge using this method (according to the battery symbol).

Ordered mine yesterday and arrived this morning. Fitted to Nav V and charged with USB lead from my iPhone plug. Just checked and fully charged. Result!!
