Nav IV v Zumo 660

as far as I understand its mainly the side buttons on the Nev which, some say, make it easier to use.
However the updates are more difficult with the Nav.
I've the 660 and never had any problems using the on-screen buttons.

I took the Mav mount off the bike and installed my Zumo 350. Works fine - and I can see the rev counter. :augie
I spliced a Can-bus repair plug (Moto-Works) to the Garmin power lead as demonstrated elsewhere by a smarter Tosser than me. :thumby:

Done the same with my 350. the only drawback is that 350 doesn't use the left handlebar GPS roller to operate.. I can live without it .

Hi Baja,

is that using the regular garmin mount ?

thanks

Stu

Yes
First I thought that OEM BMW will fit but as it is almost the same mount (bar the pin contacts) , same shape and bolts mounting points, it is however turned 90 degree, so there is no way 350 can be mounted on it without some sort of adaptor for bolts + I don't know which OEM pins are power supply and if they match.

I have removed OEM one and just mounted 350 mount with its ram grab and used BMW Can Bus wire to connect Garmin to the right hand side Can Bus connector

I am nearly sure the bm nav is only Bluetooth compatible and the ordinary 660 can be hard wired.

The BMW could be hard wired if it wasn't for its mount which stops the ability to use some of its jacks. 660 you get both options Bluetooth and hardwiring.

The BMW Nav just seems to be over priced for the use of four buttons and if you have a WC the wheelie thing.

I think I would rather spend the extra £200 plus quid on petrol to go riding.

Isn't there a audio out on the loom from the mount as there is on normal 660?

On the mount on the LC, you do not get the 4 buttons. I never had a BMW Nav IV before on any of the previous versions, so cannot state this with confidence, but I assume the new ring controller thingy replicates the functions of the 4 buttons on previous BMW mounts.

So, if you can do without those functions, you are probably better off saving your money and getting a 660. (Unless, of course, you can get a deal from the dealer when buying a new LC).

Only in mono I think, did loads of research before choosing and for my set up the zumo worked far better for audio (mp3s) and Paul08 is right on WC you lose the buttons anyways, as you do on the K1600

Another point worth noting is that it is quite easy to knock the wheel on the bar as you operate the indicators with your thumb. This would cause the Nav IV to change page/function.

This hasn't been an issue for me. And I do find being able to use the wheel to quickly change to the other screens more useful than I thought I would.

+1 I have knocked it occasionally, but the benefit of switching screens quickly outweighs the irritation of doing it inadvertently. But then I'm a pretty laid back easygoing sort of fella.

The pain of the extra £150 for buying a BMW branded GPS and custom software has almost been forgotten (give it another month and a copy of my wife's credit card statement and it will be ancient history). And I'm now glad I have the full integration

So, if I understand correctly, if I fit my 660 into the BMW mount, it will just work as it does now, ie touch screen.
Is there an output lead so that I can connect to my Autocom? Stereo or mono?

Yes it works fine as a touch screen but regarding the output lead, in a word, no. The socket is cunningly covered by the mount.
However, if you drill/cut a gap in the left top of the mount in line with the Garmin output socket, then you can connect your output lead to it and to your headphones.
I almost went this route but have just bought a Sena SMH10R bluetooth kit to connect wirelessly but I was sorely tempted.

Hijacking the thread somewhat, but I am very interested in the Sena SMH10R, if for no other reason than it is less of a carbunkle on the side of the helmet than the SMH10. Can you give me your impressions as a user?

And do you use the Sena helmet speakers, or have you modded it to use in ear speakers?

I think I would look at swapping out the Garmin part of the mount i.e the power pins etc and keeping the BMW bit, then refit your Garmin bit and then add the BMW mount to it. That way you get your audio out of Garmin and power in from the bike.

Bear in mind that's all said with out exampling the BMW mount fully and assuming that BMW have used the basic garmin mount as part of their mount.
