One of the group for my upcoming French trip uses an iPhone to navigate. I have never owned an iPhone or any Apple product and having looked in the MRA support and forum, it would appear that he will need a third party navigation app from the Apple Store to download and run the MRA routes I have written.

Can anyone suggest one for these purposes please? Thank you kindly.

MRA have their own navigation app. It is called MyRoute-App

Send him this link to download it. He will however need to buy a licence for it to work for €79 one off payment or €3.95 per month.

App link
MRA prices link.

Hi, yes I'm aware of that app as I have it but I wasn't aware it could be bought monthly until he decides whether he likes it or not. He is a free user, can he still do this? Thanks very much.

What software does he use in his phone?

A. Google Maps

B. Apple Maps

C. TomTom Go

D. Calimoto

E. Something else, haven’t a clue.

Your MRA created route can be exported as GPX file. TomTom Go and Calimoto for example can import GPX file routes. Whether these will remain same as those shown in MRA, I can’t answer that.

Apple and Google Maps do not allow you to do directly import GPX files.

Personally, despite having it. I di not use MRA Navigation in my phone, but rather stick with Apple and Google maps for when I drive my van for work. On a motorcycle. It is Garmin XT. Bigger display than that can be found on any phone, and it is designed to do exactly that, to be a motorcycle navigator, plus more. Importing files into it is also a doddle.

Thanks very much, EVskij, your information will give him food for thought about the best option for him. I am encouraging him to buy a standalone Nav. I know this will be heresy to some people on the forum but I have found them more reliable than phone related stuff.

Forgive me. Do you mean he needs a paid subscription (Bronze/Silver/Gold) to use the app that then costs 3.95 Euros a month?
He can use just the MyRoute-app, as a standalone satnav, in a similar fashion as one would with say Google or Apple maps.
However, unlike Google or Apple, MRA do charge a subscription fee, because that aren’t as huge at the other two.
MRA charge a one off €79.00 fee for life, or a monthly fee of €3.95. This means that the user can unsubscribe at any time, should he/she/they/them do not like it.
He does not need (albeit it is rather useful and simple enough to use) a route planning counterpart that comes in 4 different flavours.

Basic (free to use, but limited in features)
Bronze
Silver
Gold.

Question 1.

If you and your group of riders can all stick together, does he need any navigation device at all? We all (or at least many of us) used to set forth without them, quite happily. Look after him and each other and all should be well.

Question 2.

Does your friend have a mount for his phone, in order to use an app?

Question 3.

If so, is the phone powered by the bike or does it rely on its own battery?

I ask as life might become difficult if the answers to questions 2 and 3 are ‘No’.

Lovely. Thanks very much. I bought lifetime Gold membership when it was on offer and haven't kept up with the changes in the options.

Hi Richard,

We are sticking together (No Man Gets Left Behind) but it means the lead can be shared amongst us, otherwise I'd be doing everything. They are all keen to develop their touring skills and navigation skills, which involves thinking about the other riders in a group and much more.

He does have a mount but is getting a Quadlock wireless charging mount which as you know, is powered from the USB port. He knows about the iPhone camera breaky problem and is considering the Quadlock stabilizer. He has access to a Nav 5 for the trip and I am encouraging him to look at stand alone navs as a long-term investment.

For just a couple of quid your friend can download Pocket Earth Pro. Dead simple to use and if he also has an iPad it makes it even easier to use for planning. You then mail him a GPX (track) of your route and he just follows the magenta line. He can also if he wishes create a route in PE based on this track by inserting the start and end points and then rubber band it around to match the track. He now has turn by turn nav and his phone will easily hold all the mapping he needs

I run PE on an elderly iPhone 6S without any SIM card or plan - so no concerns about camera or vibesIMG_5409.jpegIMG_5409.jpeg

I too like Pocket Earth Pro, but have never used it for navigation. I might well give it a go, not least as you have recommended it before.
