Navigator IV + Multi-Controller (wheel thing)

Hi,

The multi-controller wheel doesn't seem to do much for me, other than jump from the map screen into a journey info screen. I haven't figured out yet how to get into the menu screen at all. I can't even go to my favourites to choose a destination or play with the settings (i hope this is not a safety feature because otherwise the wheel will be completely pointless). The only destination I've managed to click on the go is 'Home'.

I have not paired a headset or phone yet, I just want to be able to use the wheel instead my *x@£$% finger. I had high expectations on these wheel, so I bought the Navigator IV which cost me a fortune.

I've read the rider's manual page 109 and everything...........if someone knows how to use it and let me know it will be very much appreciated.

I occasionally access the menus of my GPS map Garmin while on the move, its very dangerous and distracting. To be ale to scroll while driving in my experience would be asking for trouble. This makes the wheel totally redundant and unnecessary, a liability for BMW. Has it been removed in the 2014 makeover?
Its not only the wheel thing that's dangerous, my Ford Focus has a windows operating system, I find im often distracted shouting at the voice activated controls or dialling numbers while on the move, its all very dangerous and not really any advantage for a driver or rider. It only takes a few minutes to pull over and make the inputs.
 
I agree - the integration of the wheel with the nav is rubbish. It gets worse if you pair a Bluetooth headset - I thought the wheel was supposed to control volume, but it just beeps.

Has anyone found a way to stop the nav pop up dialogue boxes from displaying? They completely cover the screen, and the only way to dismiss them is using the touchscreen, the handlebar control doesn't do it.

The wheel (at least on the 1600) is excellent, controlling several functions as well as allowing some sensible control over the Nav 4 device.

It's operation is simplicity itself and is far from dangerous. Indeed, it's arguably safer than leaning forward to push and poke at a touch-screen, whilst hooning a
Well ridden 1200 down the twisties, creaming FireBlades, Ducattis and ZX10's.

Get to love it and above all get to know and love your Nav 4; it really is very good.
 
Wrapping, thanks for your input, do you know how to use it fully? I need someone to explain me how to access the menu using the control wheel

you can scroll and flick left right plus bu holding to left or right for a bit it will do more,, The one I like best is to skip tracks on the MP3...

also turn off safety aspect to allow touch screen functions whilst riding, but I agree in that it should do more like scroll through fav destinations.. but I understand its all controlled by what elf n safety say is acceptable ish..:thumb2

How about people posting exactly what and how they use the wheel?..

My fav is to flick to MP3 Screen then push and hold to skip tracks,

and home button is useful as is zoom again flick to screen and push hold wheel.

I like the zoom in feature, and the quick flick to the right as soon as you start the bike, to go straight to the map, rather than the main screen.:thumb

Maybe a software update down the line will unlock more features.:augie

On the 1600, yes, where it controls all sorts of functions, including the heated seat and switching the headlight to ride hand of the road driving. It is excellent.

I haven't ridden a 1200 WC, nor am I likely to for any distance over the foreseeable.

The trick (if there is one) is to play around with it, as you really cannot break it. For instance, the most useful thing I first did was to set the default control to the GPS device. On the the 1600 this is done by bringing up the GPS screen (don't forget the 1600 has an entirely integral and separate 'Information' screen) and then pushing the 'diamond' end of the toggle switch. I can then use te wheel to zoom in and out, change the page the GPS displays etc. etc.

Pushing the 'Menu' end of the toggle switch then cycles the 'Information' screen through its various functions ...... Heated bits, bike info, radio / iPod control, suspension settings etc. etc. all then controlled by the wheel, perfectly safely.

I have the GPS device on silent, to save the woman burbling in my ear. I don't bother with music, nor the phone, though it's easy to do should I want to, up to and including full track listings, volume control, phone book etc etc.

Everything works just as it shoud do.

So if you get a fullscreen message up on the nav eg 'mobile safety camera zone' or something like that, how do you dismiss it using the wheel? The only way I can find is to use the touchscreen.

I am very happy that I got my second hand navi4 for about £250 off a mate and didn't spend £600 on it. I think there are probably other cheaper systems out there that are better value.

It's a very clever ploy by BMW to shift the soon to be replaced navi4 - by providing a nav baseplate and nav wheel on the TE bikes - tempting owners to buy it. Or am I being a pessimist again?

I bought a Sena SMH10 to do this last week, but it's no good unfortunately - music quality is rubbish, you can barely hear it, no bass at all. Outbound calls simply don't work, and inbound calls aren't feasible because of wind noise on the mic. It's going back to the supplier later today.

I bought a TE and was annoyed by the fact that I was going to have a useless wheel and a sat nav cradle with no use to me so I felt in the trap and bought the nav IV. I am now very disappointed to have done so because the wheel does nothing but flicking from the map screen into the detail journey screen. Nothing else and haven't got any answers as to what else can do. I want to use the wheel to navigate through the menu and play with the settings.
 
I use either Ultimateear monitors or seinhuasser ear buds, both through a BLbluetooth dongle Sony MW600... brilliant,,

I have the Sony dongle too. Superb sound quality but... After about an hour or so the music starts to get interrupted by short silences that get more and more frequent until I have to give up. This is my second dongle, the first was a £10 Chinese jobie that had the same problem. I assumed the dongle was the problem but now suspect the sat-nav. Does this sound familiar?

I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to resolve this. Do BMW have a technical help line/web site?
