Hi Folks,

I know its a GS forum but there is a multitude of knowledge here !

I have an K1200 GT 07 it has been in a garage stood for two years, it has not

even been on the road yet ! my problem is its due an VOSA test for road

worthyness which is fine every thing works but the Xenon low beam light and

no front side lights !!

Reading the manual it states that the low beam light should come on when

engine is fired up, after starting the engine I can get the high beam ie two

lights to come on and the high beam flash rocker switch will work fine but no

low beam Xenon light and no front side lights.

The rear light works fine and the rear stop light works fine.

Looking in the manual it states threre are no fuse's on the bike to check, so

has anyone come across this problem before ?

I have just got a price for a new bulb ie D2R/35 w and thats £127 sqiud I can

only assume bad earth affecting Xenon and front side lights.

Oh and the bike is brand new two years old no warranty and a salvage job.

Many thanks Mack......

I've heard that, with some bikes, the lights won't come on unless there's a reasonable amount of charge in the battery.

Apparently, the bike has to be run for a while, before the lights will come on.

Dunno if that happens with BMWs though.

Is your battery fully charged up?

Someone will be along shortly with the right answer!

Oh - salvaged such as washed up on the beach? Could be corrosion somewhere maybe...

wont be a bulb mate, theyre very rare to go and it wouldnt take your side lights with it. Its something to do with the actual lighting system of the bike rather than the xenon kit. if the kit was earthing.. youd know about it *i found this the other day.. when it earthed through me!* Also the ballast would make a horrible "EEEEERRRGGGHHH.. BBBZZZZTTTT" noise :P

I have some spare bulbs i could supply if you get stuck though bud.. and they arent the best part of £130!.. i sell full 35w kits for £35 lol.

Hi Folks,

Great responce to the question, well the bike came out of a container
from the Napoli and the container was dry, the bike has been garaged for two
years now so thats why I was thinking about bad earth etc.

The other theory is what Davel said about battery not up to full charge tis worth
a check problem is riding the bike,as not even registered yet and Vosa test
on Monday pm .

Load shedding relay sorry was is that can you explain ?

Many thanks Mack.....

Load shedding relay, on some models this relay powers down the headlamp when the starter is cranking, I just thought a problem with it might give the symptoms you describe.

Yes thanks I get the gist now, I suppose in conjunction with a low battery aswell that the lamp will not fire up untill fully charged and ready.

Many thanks Mack....

Connect jump leads from a car and try it then. That will eliminate any battery related problems as long as the connections are good!

Hi Packer,

Yes I did think that, I will put a spare battery on charge and try it

tomorrow as a boost just to get the juice up to full whack.

Many thanks Mack....

Correct me if i'm wrong - but I dont see how this can be a fault with the battery if it fires up the engine AND some lights are working.

surely the engine start will be the biggest strain on the battery and if THAT works the lights should too.

far more likely there is a fault with the lights themselves or their wiring.

seems absolutely pointless to me (and a red herring) to be messing around with jump leads when its clear the battery has enough charge to start the engine.

thing to do would be to get a multimeter on the end of the lighting circuit and work back from there.

Note :-

By the end of the lighting circuit i mean the bikes STANDARD wiring,

DO NOT TEST THE WIRING LEADING FROM THE HID BALLAST TO THE BULB. If you want to do that ensure the bike is not running.

Hi Motobiker,

Sorry but I agree with Stewart H ,but the proof of the pudding
will be tomorrow when I connect an extra battery.

If that does not do the job then I stand corrected, I hope its the former and not
the latter:)

Many thanks Mack...

I misread Stewarts post... he is talking about a problem with the relay itself. NOT the battery. we know the battery works - because the engine fires up.

I wonder if these super clever 1200 wotsits even have a 'LSR' or does the canbus thingie do it all (as well as make tea)

not sure how you'ld diagnose that one without a multimeter though.. not sure how an extra battery will help either.

I agree... if it has not got any fuses as bsa250 stated earlier then its canbus wiring, and therefore no load shedding relay.

Got a dealer nearby where you could have a'chat' with the 'Techs'??

Hi Digga,

Time is the problem, busy all day tomorrow and Vosa test Mon pm &

nearest dealer next county.

Many thanks Mack......
