I think about changing the rear suspension of my 1998 R1100GS – I think the original suspension [Showa?/BMW] has become a little weak. Another factor: I’m quite big, weight 105 kilograms [220lbs], and I frequently carry passengers or luggage.

I know there are several manufacturers: Ohlins, Hyperpro, WP, Penske, Fox Shox, but I might have missed some. I have experience with WP front suspension on a Yamaha, but I read somewhere that Ohlins is preferred for GS. Also, I read that Ohlins can be rebuilt, which is not the case with all of them.

Which manufacturer should I go for and why? I’d like to hear some experiences, positive and negative.

Also, according to the Haynes Manual, replacing the rear suspension is not that difficult a job [three wrenches on a scale of five]. I’m not that experienced, so I wonder, is it that easy/difficult and are there specific points to note before I set out to do it myself?

Maxton are good, built to your weight!

I had one from them, easy to deal with and they will fit it too!
Although your a bit far off for fitting. They're on the web.

Fitted an Ohlins to my adv

total piece of piss to fit

my weight is 120 kg and the swmbo comes on the back regulary

i have an upgraded spring fitted and its much better :)

...
bare in mind that technoflex claims that they will modify your suspension if you change your bike, to fit the new one. They also are the only to give a 5yr warranty.
