I think about changing the rear suspension of my 1998 R1100GS – I think the original suspension [Showa?/BMW] has become a little weak. Another factor: I’m quite big, weight 105 kilograms [220lbs], and I frequently carry passengers or luggage.
I know there are several manufacturers: Ohlins, Hyperpro, WP, Penske, Fox Shox, but I might have missed some. I have experience with WP front suspension on a Yamaha, but I read somewhere that Ohlins is preferred for GS. Also, I read that Ohlins can be rebuilt, which is not the case with all of them.
Which manufacturer should I go for and why? I’d like to hear some experiences, positive and negative.
Also, according to the Haynes Manual, replacing the rear suspension is not that difficult a job [three wrenches on a scale of five]. I’m not that experienced, so I wonder, is it that easy/difficult and are there specific points to note before I set out to do it myself?
