Hiya, been trying to set a new Netgear router,
followed the idiots guide, connected everything as it should be , got all the little lights that should be lit, lit. and hey presto when i come to actualy get to the part when it should auto connect, i get a screen saying the pc doesnt see the router.
In trouble shooter there is something about network properties and having to configure it for this router.
Help:nenau cos im getting pissed off with it right now,
even having a couple of pints didnt help:beer:
ps running windows xp and the system has been recently formatted.
prior to setting this router ive been connecting via speedtouch 330 and a Thopson modem.
Any ideas? cos im out of my depth

I am a total IT numpty & I may have missed something but are you on cable or a BT line as this will make a diference how you IP address is obtained, cable changes every time you log on & is random therefore the fixed router held info will not match your PC held info & you will have a firewall conflict, there is a frig although I am at a loss to guide you through it, but I know nowt & may be talking absolute bollocks.

Unless I have lost the plot - I don't think he can actually get into the router set up screen, which is the problem we are trying to fix :nenau

OK, fair enough, I'll get my coat. :blast

No I won't. I've just done a 12 hour night shift; I'll hit the pit. :D

Good luck..

Dave.

P.s. If I 'dream up' any other daft ideas, I'll pass them on...

thats right i couldnt ,cant get onto that page:mad: Dragon but thanks for the input.
Im getting there , be it very slowly, and im sorry if it all seams a bit simple to you computer nerds:augie
Clive your doing a top job and thanks for being so patient:beerjug:

do you have any of these in network connections .........................?

network.jpg

ive set all the connection icons to "obtain an ip addy automatically"
then closed it all down, restarted and still nothing.
Do you think it would be worth getting it formatted to clean off any shite that ive added or changed by mistake?
Ps Mech i dont get any of those:blast
OHHH this is turning out to be fun, told the missus last week it would take 20 mins :thumb2

Nah, just take it out to the garden with a can of petrol and burn the fecker :D

Not sure what to suggest next :(

Stupid question - what Network card do you have fitted in your PC?

Have you read this bit from here

Q: I have a SpeedTouch USB/330 supplied by my ISP, but want to add a wireless connection. Can I use the modem to connect to a wireless router?
A: The SpeedTouch USB/330 is designed for connecting a single computer to broadband. To connect multiple computers or to convert to a wireless connection (instead of USB), it is necessary to replace the SpeedTouch 330 with a wireless router.

Daz.

Have you been able to get into the router's setup screen ?

Firstly, attach the LAN cable to the ethernet card in your 'puter and the router.

Then open Internet Explorer and type 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 or possibly 192.168.2.1 into the address bar ....I say I.E. because some routers won't save settings if other browsers are used.

You will then prob be faced with a login screen asking for something like Admin and Password.....the default is usually the same words in each, i.e Admin for Admin and Password for password.

This should get you into a setup screen where you input your ISP username and password.

Having done that and SAVED the settings ........maybe in another screen such as Tools or similar, you normally restart the router and you should be online.

You can check other settings by looking in Windows START> Connect to> Show all connections.

You should find an icon for any BB modem you used previously, another for the Ethernet or LAN card and one for the router you just attached.

Have a go at this first and report back ?

Lol , nope not been able to get in there:ymca
I have been using the Thompson 330 uip to now.
ive just had the side off the case looking for the oilfilter and sparkplugs but cant find them?:augie
As far as i can make out there is no seperate card and the usb and ethernet connectors go straight onto the motherboard "n force 2"
If i formatted the pc and started from scratch with just the operating system installed, would this , do you think(in your capacity of being a pc god) enable me to set it up.
I have nothing of any real importance on the pc at the moment as it was formatted about 2 weeks since when i had a problem with the graphics card.

If you have an ethernet connector then there should be a Network adapter/card showing up somewhere - maybe it is disabled in Device Manager?

From that FAQ entry about your 330 and from http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/Specifications.asp?ProductID=665 I don't think you can connect a router to it - you are connecting your PC via USB to it at present. i.e. I'm now confused how you tried to set up PC->Router->Modem at the start of all this?

In any case - once we find the damn Network adapter properties we can set it to use DHCP or a specific 192.168.0.2 IP address which means you should then be able to connect it to the router and see the router set up page - even though I don't thing with the 330 the router will be able to get anywhere outside your house ;)

Can't help you if it ain't got sparkplugs....I don't do diesel !

Still. Firstly, if you go into the Start>Connect to>show all connections....can you see something described as Local Area Connection ?
If so R click and have a look at 'Properties' where it should show the make of ethernet card. You should see a 'configure' box and if you click there and look under the 'Advanced' tab, it should indicate whether it is actually configured for use. Something like Full or half duplex might be selected.

Sometimes, the Lan port on the computer has be be enabled in the BIOS, so if there is no evidence on the 'show all connections' you may need to do this.

I wouldn't think you'd need another format since you've only just finished doing one.

P.S. You may need to get some 'oilchange' recommendations off the 'other' forum :lol

Sorry X posted with Clive whose advice mine isn't meant to conflict with.

Are you actually trying to use the router and modem together ? Isn't the Router actually a modem router combined as most are these days ?

so if in network connections you dont see whats in the pic i posted i go back to my original post is the ethernet enabled in the bios? I dont think it is because it should show even if its not being used [or it could be the driver for it has not been installed]. I could give you my phone number if it would help and talk you through it if you lived closer I would come over and do it for you.

Er, 'scuse me again, just another silly thought: Daz, have you got just a router, or is it a Modem/router combined? The latter would mean you don't need the Speedtouch at all. I'm automatically thinking Modem/router, as that's what I've got.

OK, bed time again...

Dave.

Dropping in late in the thread, but a few ideas and thoughts.

Firstly, the IP address of 91.xxx.yyy.zzz was a live Internet address, not a local address like you would get from the router. This means that the PC was still configured to use the connection for the modem for anything network related. Unless the IP addresses were completely spot-on, all your attempts at contacting the router would have been going up the modem connection and off into nowhere.

Does your router have a cable or ADSL connection? If not, you've probably got the wrong piece if kit as what I think you are trying to achieve is to have the Internet coming into the router and then going to other PCs in the house.

In order to sort this out, you will need to disable the modem - I recommend shutting down the PC and then unplugging the modem. Now would be a good time to plug the Internet connection into the router while you're at it. Watch out - if it's ADSL, you can plug the wire into one of the computer sockets. It shouldn't do any harm, but it certainly won't work :)

Next boot the PC.

I suspect that the network connection has been disabled. On my XP system, you click on the 'My Computer' icon on the desktop and click 'Manage', and then click on the item about half-way down called 'Device Manager'. On the right, under 'Network Adapters', look for an Ethernet Controller or anything that's marked as disabled, with a red 'X'. Right click on it to enable.

If you can't get to the manager from the 'My Computer' icon, start a command prompt like you did for Clive's post about ipconfig, but type 'compmgmt.msc' and it should pop up.

Once you have enabled the ethernet interface, close the window and the advice about ipconfig and the addresses given in the previous posts should all make sense.

This is not a reason to reinstall your software - that generally does more harm than good and should only ever be done as a last resort due to the risk of losing personal files and info.

I think that is what I was trying to describe in my earlier post, its good to develope a firm friendship with a local computer nerd even if it costs you a few pints, I find this system usually works when my confuser don't, quite often they do it for nowt in a headlong rush to impress you with there undoubted IT skills & show what an inferior tosser you really are.

Ok just so you dont all think ive lost interest, been working 12 1/2 hr nights and this is all a bit too much for my likkle brain to get round.
Ill be going through the last few posts in the next couple of days.
Ill keep you posted as to what develops.
Thinking of making this into a mini series for TV(any sponsors?)
Again thanks for all the help.
Just to clarify im trying to set up a Netgear 108 Mbps Rangemax ADSL Modem Wireless Router.
Which if im right in thinking will replace my Thompson 330 wired Modem.
Right i need some more kip before tonight. see ya:thumb

Thanks for the info on the config - it is what what I thought you were trying to do, so you should be fine.

Just remember that you can't have 2 ADSL devices plugged into the same phone line at the same time because neither will then work.

Just been following Wombles advice.
disconnected Usb from back of pc that goes to Speed touch modem.
Ethernet connector to Router already out.
Everything shut down then Restarted.
Managed to get to Network adaptors, and there we had the following.

-Direct Parallel
-Wan Miniport(IP)
-Wan Miniport(IP) Pocket Schedular miniport
-Wan Miniport(L2TP)
-Wan Miniport(PPPOE)
-Wan Miniport(PPTP
)

This was with the Ethernet cable plugged in from the router

In properties all these were enabled and said to be working properly.

Thought id plug the USB in from the Modem and when i did this was added to the list

-Speedtouch USB ADSL POP

I COULDNT see anything relating to an Ethernet Controler and like i said eveything was enabled.
Well thats clear as mud.
When the ethernet cable is plugged in there are two tiny LED's that light up next to the socket on the back of the pc (orange and green)

Im going to the for sale section now to see if theres i can buy to cheer myself up
