Win7 7 installed on the desktop just fine.

Now I am back to "How the hell did I manage to persuade my laptop to see the 3G dongle hanging off a USB port on the desktop, so it can access the Internet."

It took me a lot of farting around to get it to work previously under XP. This time doesn't seem like it's going to be any easier.

The laptop can see the desktop and its available disks via the network & vice versa.

The dongle is "Shared" for internet usage.

Normally the 3G dongle just appears as an icon on the laptop when the desktop is on the Internet. At the moment, nothing.

I can't remember the final stages of the solution I found previously, but am wondering if I should be "bridging" the 3G dongle to another connection?

:( PB

there has been reports of Win 7 not seeing USB internet dongles - you may need to research your model - as we found out with my cousins last nite (Telstra Wireless internet) - it doesnt work!

Ted,

Cheers.

The Win 7 desktop can use the 3G dongle. It can also see the home network hub and the laptop on it & vice versa.

It is just that the laptop, etc. cannot "see" the 3G dongle on the desktop, therefore cannot connect to t'internet.

I'm going to reset everything to its startup state and try reconfiguring the devices from scratch, as I can't remember if I had the network enabled when I set up ICS and that seems to make a difference. PB

The most reliable way of connecting with my mobile broadband dongle seems to plug it into the usb and then click the autorun icon. "Only" using vista though :)

Think I have found the problem. It's a bit more basic than I anticipated. :blast
The 64-bit ASUS motherboard has a 32-bit MSI bios loaded (& Win7 32-bit). Hence drivers, etc. are a bit out of line with reality.

Ho hum. Now for a fun week of refreshing bios, reinstalling Win7 64-bit and then finally having a go at cracking the original problem of accessing the 3G from the networked laptops. :augie PB

Updating the flash BIOS did the trick. ICS worked fine, although I did format the c: drive and re-install from scratch, just to make sure there wasn't anything to get in the way.
Just goes to show. :eek Well, something anyway. :) PB
