Neutral and reserve fuel light failure??

OK - MYSTERY! My neutral light was not working - so I replaced the gear selector switch...still not working and now it appears the reserve fuel light is also not working!!?? The RID works ie. indicates fuel bars and gears. It is not the globes - have checked. Now when the bike is in gear the neutral light and reserve light glow very dimly... if side-stand is retracted they stop glowing? Have checked this cut-out switch and seems OK.

Any suggestions welcome as it is FRUSTRATING not knowing what is wrong. I have looked for a short without success.
IS there a Sparky out there or someone with a wiring diagram who could maybe throw some light on this anomoly???

The 'glowing dimly' bit makes it sound like a bad earth to me, Dom - sorry I can't be of more help...

This was one of my thoughts but the earth wires all go into the loom and all else works A-OK???

Long shot - but worth a try - change your rear light bulb. Mine was shorting, caused the fuse to blow - lost neutral and fuel light. The bulb corroding and having a 'loss' rather than a full blown short is apparently not unkown.

If that fails, I gather that the wiring loom can chaff under the petrol tank causing all kinds of electical gremlins (This was what the 1st BMW dealer told me when faced with above problem, 'twas the second one that suggested the brake bulb.

Will certainly give both these a try - Gremlin is certainly the word!
I am determined though to knock the bugger on the 'cone'!

Sounds like you have a fault in the instrument cluster wiring harness ( runs along the fairing bracket to a multiplug under the fuel tank) If its not filled with water already(through washing etc) then split it open about halfway along.There are a few crimped connectors in there and its not unusual for one of them to break - particularly on the earth side, the wires being quite thin.
Had quite a few of these so hope this helps

I Agree With Leigh

Had the same problem about a year ago but with different lamps. Split warning lamp loom open and found two of the junction crimps broken. As I was due to go on hols. I did a temporary repair - got no help from B-W!!! new loom costs about £120!!. This repair lasted until recently, when problems returned - but as leigh said this could also be due to water as this section of loom seems to fill with water?. Anyway obtained s/hand instrument light loom from Motorworks and fitted this and all is ok now and it also allows me to do a permanent repair on the original loom - just in case!!!!
