I have an 1150GS 2001
Having had the misfortune to have my neutral light switch brake I was shocked to get a quote from the BMW dealer that was iro £250. "Its a 3 hour job and involves taking out the swinging arm govnr"
Thankfully my local bike shop were up to the job and after getting an almost brand new switch from Motorworks for £13 the total bill for labour came to €80 (£53)
So please be warned that if given the "swinging arm out" line it is possible to do this job by removing only the shock.
Regards to all

switch

You don't need to remove anything from that area of the bike you can get to it underneath with a long nose pliers. It's only a spring clip and it pops off,but you do have to remove the tank to get to the plug terminal. You can only pull the wire through the hole in the gear box as the switch is tooo big to go though,Don't know why the shock was removed:confused:£53 you were done big time.Sorry

Where abouts under the tank is the plug terminal? Sounds like I will also need to undertake this job sometime as my Neutral light has also given up the ghost! (I did notice that you could see the switch from under bike and appeared as if one could intentionally get to it through hole without removing swingarm...so had been wondering about the long winded stories about major strip)

The terminal is just above the end of your air intake on the left side, chase the loom up from the switch as there are couple very simalar.Be carefull when you pull it apart as the pins are very fine, pull evenly otherwise you could bend them, but then you are putting a new switch in so not really a problem.Andy

Might sound silly, but have you checked your neutral light bulb?.Andy

Yes - did that, globe is fine. Funny thing is the Fuel light and Charge light come on dimly when I engage a gear but no Neutral light... something f'ed!

post this on the technical forum, someone I'm sure will give you some clue where to look:confused:

Now I pulled the switch (plug) at rear of swing arm (helps if you are an amputee of a few fingers to get in there ... head torch also helps...) and cleaned the contacts and used some switch cleaner.
Now after replacing switch I do not even get the RID display which I had before ... fuuu'k...worse! So now I guess next step is to replace the switch and here is the QUESTION... is the switch
really just the cap piece and wire to terminal under the tank OR is there also an internal part that could also be faulty????
