Ordered a new 1250GSA to replace my 4 yr old 1250GSA; last year paid £192 fully comp with Carole Nash so thought I’d make the call to swap insurance to my new (pending) bike… “sorry, the value is too high, we’ll have to give you a new quote” was the response. Their new quote was £2055!!!

Post codes don’t help, but I shopped around (A LOT) and finally got it for £575. Even so, it’s still almost 3 times my last premium. They’re a law unto themselves are insurance companies.

When I bought my first GS I hit this “15000 ceiling”
Feels as if the companies need to adjust their levels, must be losing a lot of business to not insure bikes that exceed that when new.

I also has my renewal with Carole Nash quadruple a few years back with no change of bike or circumstances.

When I bought my first GS, BMW insurance refused to insure it because it was too expensive . I know it wasn't really BMW, it was Devitt, but I would have thought thy would have discussed the new bike price before agreeing any collaboration.

You couldnt make it up could you.

I edited the thread about the cost / difficulty of insuring a 1300 GS in 2024. Rather than deleting posts I tried where possible to find them a new home. There was an awful lot to edit through, including a whole bunch about brake pads on a 1300, how to apply the brakes on a modern motorcycle, a picture of a 1300, how much a fellow’s van now cost to insure and a whole bunch about being over 75.

My apologies if your post got broken away from its partner.

Richard

PS Was it by chance in reply to this bunch of posts, lifted from the 1300 insurance thread saga?

If so, I’ll gladly move it across.

:beerjug:

Threads meander
Why not just leave them alone and let them run their course ?

Just been refused cover for my R1250GSA which is due to arrive tomorrow by Bikesure, BMW Insurance and my existing insurer, Carol Nash! value 19k, full 9yrs NCB, garaged. Help!

CN asked me for evidence that I had experience of "riding high powered bikes" when I came to add my then new GS1250 to my insurance.

Apparently having been insured by them for the preceding 19 years was a) sufficient, and b) a surprise to the twerp on the phone.

Managed to find a quote at £700 with Lexham. Bemoto wanted £1700

Can't make it up, although im sure half of em do. I changed halfway through a year and Kawasaki gave me the same crap, so then asked so you can't insure your own H2sxse then as the value is about the same, I was on hold for 5 mins and they changed the bike over for the remaining 6 months, don't know who they are the brokers for but have to go through all this again in October. Can't wait.......
£650 for the year o_O:oops:
My superduke GT which I was more likely to die on than the GS was only £170..........

Snap, just replaced my 21' GSA & ordered a new GSA for delivery next week. Paid £300 for insurance for the year for the 21 plate, current company refused to cover new GSA. Had to pay £35 for the privilege of cancelling the policy.
New policy with another company £770! 9yrs ncb, garaged etc. The joys of a new bike!! Legal theft but what can you do?

I was pondering whether or not it was worth trading my '19GSA in for a new one as they are reportedly a bit smoother and quieter now?

.......I don't think I will bother having read the comments above.

I had this problem when I bought a gold wing. Apparently a lot of insurers won’t touch anything which costs over 20k.

You could find out how much insurance is going to cost you, before you sign the PCP documents, I guess.
or the HP documents, but yes, would've been prudent! Would it have stopped me from changing, not really, would it have stopped me from complaining about the cost of the increase? Again not really, I'm getting older and grumpier.

That's what I did when contemplating the change from a 22MY R1250GSA to a 24MY R1250GSA. Small increase in premium for the remaining couple of months so I did the deal! Renewal duw in about 6weeks so will see what they do then!

Getting similar problem.....2.5yr old R1250 GS TE replacing with new one next Wednesday......Hastings (my own insurer) initially wouldnt quote for some reason (2x3point speeders in '23; quiet village location, proper chain/lock/anchor etc). Quote has doubled for new bike vs insurance arranged on old one only 5weeks ago ! The 'value' (debatable considering the number of GSA's that are going out the dealer doors at the moment) is obviously more but its exactly the same bike !

Any chance of people noting which Insurance companies ARE quoting please? I understand everyones circumstances are different, location, age, experience etc. but getting nervous for collecting Wednesday as Hastings will NOT agree premium until I tell them the registration number....when I give them my private plate it confuses their system to quote (identical bike, identical plate etc). So I gave them another plate number and got the 'doubled' figure noted above. Its starting to take the shine off getting a new bike (which was a cracking deal btw). I dont mind paying more but worried they'll decline completely !

Very good Wapping - I knew I could rely on you ;)

““Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won't you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, 'This person began to build and wasn't able to finish.”

But….to be a little fairer to me…I did try and estimate the cost of insurance (and I haven’t said I cannot afford it….just that it takes the shine off it and I dont know anyone who ‘enjoys’ paying more for the same/similar service/product!) but Hastings are adamant they wont quote without a vehicle reg.

I’ve tried 10 broker/direct sites now, the only ones who will quote (for my circumstances) are Hastings, as above, and Bennett’s who want £2,200 ?!

As more and more bikes cost above £20000 this will become a more familiar story.
When I bought the goldwing, my insurer ( LV) wouldn't quote .
Many other insurers where quoting stupid prices and excesses.
I then e mailed the CEO of LV on a Sunday evening asking why they couldn’t quote, and explaining that even then many bikes are difficult to insure. I didn’t really expect a reply.
Monday lunchtime I got a reply stating it had been passed to his right hand man who would contact me.
About an hour later I got the call. He explained about the 20k limit insurers work on and explained this value had been in place for years. I put it to him that more and more bikes cost above that now and perhaps it was time to re assess the value limit. A lot of other stuff was discussed as well. I got the impression that I was being used as a sample to get the views of the average customer .
He promised to get someone to ring me back with a resolution as quick as possible.
This happened shortly after and I got cover at a reasonable cost.
2 years later LV pulled out of the bike insurance market. 😔
