Which of these do you reckon would best suit my fairly basic-spec 1200, it only has ABS and heated grips - original battery was a BMW-badged Exide 19Ah.

Exide GEL 12-19.......rated at 19Ah/170CCA or
Exide AGM 12-18......rated at 18Ah/250CCA.

Do I need more ooomph by way of CCA, or the slightly higher Ah?

Feel free to reply with witless comments, I know some on here live for it.....:D

Motobatt or lithium type

I had an exide type thingy not impressed

My recommendation is for the Motobatt MBTX12U. Mines been on for over 4 years and 50k miles
it's never let me down and is still going strong. The one for sale on here is a good battery but is
1.5cm. taller than the 12U i have which isn't acceptable to me and, it's more expensive as
the 12U can be got for £46 delivered. The double set of terminal posts is a bonus too.

Had two Motobatt, the standard size one followed by the larger one which does without the spacer on the bottom. Both failed after just over a year. Gone back to the original which had felt weak when starting the bike but never failed, both Motobatt had complete failures. Have a new Exide AGM ready to go in before my annual Europe jaunt in a few weeks time. (Hexhead GSA, no ABS only heated grips and fog lights.)

Thanks for the replies chaps. I didn't mention that my bike's an RT.....sorry! :blast It can take a physically larger battery than the GS - its currently got a Motobatt fitted, but its getting ready now at around 5 years old. I'm leaning towards the Exide 12-19, which is what was fitted from new and seems to have lasted for 7 years or so.

I fitted a lythium battery to my sons nsr125. I’m impressed so far. JJH

I'm done with battery threads now as it's all a matter of what you like, your experiences good and bad. One says Motobatt another
says they are rubbish and so on and so on. It's the same with tyre threads, in the end there isn't much (anything) to be gained from
the replies as they are all subjective and people, i think, already pretty much know what they prefer but would like confirmation which
they, (usually) don't get.

Yeah, i know, i'm a :rob :D

I was just looking for advice regarding Ah and CCA, rather than which brand, but I know what you mean! :thumb

It's a trade off,

AA CCh VS size of battery - amount of current draw & time to recharge

https://www.tayna.co.uk/motorcycle-batteries/f/bmw/r1200gs-k1200r-05-present/

Gives a nice selection of types

As you can see one has a whopping 330 CCA

http://all-about-lead-acid-batterie...acid-battery-fundamentals/what-are-amp-hours/

covers CCA & AH

The exide which i beleive is oe fit is 12AH 200CCA
I used a motobatt which is 200CCA 14AH(10HR)

Ive found Ironically it's hot starting where you need your power not cold lol

How often does the bike start in the real, proper cold? If you commute all year and park outside at home or work then higher CCA might be better. If the bike is not used in winter or is always in a garage then CCA is less likely to be a factor. The only time the OE battery on my RS has been a bit sluggish has been in the depths of winter when the bike was parked outside at work and it did not rise above freezing all day.

I have a JMT lithium battery. Actual capacity is 4AH but it can use all of that while a lead acid will only deliver 30% of its total AH at any sort of useful current.

I paid a fair bit less but that was before Brexit. It appears to struggle below 5 degs C. But all it needs is a few seconds of slow churning then pause to put your gloves on and it will start the bike no worries. I don't have power to the garage so can't use an optimate. This doesn't need life support and so far has been totally reliable.

Just replaced my BMW badged Exide 19Ah with another Exide 19 Ah from Motorworks :thumb

I have been happy with the performance of the Exide gel battery's on several different BMW's, seem to last around 7 years regularly maintained on Optimate.
