New bike day!

Heated seats on mine are brill, added with the grips and a Gerbin heated jacket , say no more !, enjoy your new bike 👍

Well I’ve just dropped it 200 yards from home :D

Approximate speed of 2 mph
..bastard!

Minimal damage, so it’s all good, bikes amazing, but the traction control is shit :D

You were going too slow - it deactivates at 5kph.

I also did something similar in 1979 on my DT250 - been out for an hour or so, riding on fresh snow and dropped it outside of the house whilst turning it in the road.

The lower crashbar goes down and bends meaning the bottom of the cam cover hits down.

I need to add the touratech extension to stiffen the whole set up and stop it from flexing.

It really was a nothing of a drop, scratch crashbar and cam cover and a broken mirror adapter. Surprised the cam cover got scraped.

Sorry to learn about your drop. The good news is that since the crashbar is stainless steel, you may remove the scratch by the help of abrasive paper.

As for the TT extension, my personal opinion is against it.

Stiffening up the crashbar, the thing is, whenever the bike drops, hitting ground will inflict a shock. The springy effect of the crashbar means that the crashbar it self will absorb the shock to a large degree. If the crashbar is stiffened up, the shock will be transfered directly into the bikes frame, with the potential of bending the frame.
Either way the cam cover will be scratched. A Machine art x-head will protect it.

What`s the point of the crash bar if the cylinder head covers are still getting damaged!?
(i think i already know the answer......)

BTW OP, i see you your bike didn`t have Brembos fitted, i thought they all would of by now, mine was - delivered 4/5 weeks ago.

Many people see it that way, and perhaps I'm wrong in my assumptions.
However, in my head, the flexing is a good thing, because the flexing will absorbe the energy transfered to the bike during the drop.
If the crashbar does not absorbe the impact, the energy will be transfered to the next point in the chain, that is the frame. So any dropdown will create a shock where the force of the impact will be taken up by the frame rather than the flexing crashbar.

Mine was a showroom stock bike, so not ordered, not sure when the build date was, but I’m guessing it’s been there a few months. Fortunately it was the exact spec I wanted.

Indeed, better for the crash bars to bend sacrificially to save the frame from damage.

maybe OP need to take piece string check frame is correct :P

They say that you lose ÂŁ1000 in depreciation just by leaving show room; in FlipFly's case it'll be ÂŁ2000 :D

Maybe consider getting the Machine Art Cylinder head protectors rather than trying to tart up the scratches on the cylinder head. This will hide the damage and protect from similar incidents in future.

I am seriously thinking of going down this route.

Enjoy your new bike Flipfly. I would avoid the engine bar supports too as I suspect the bending of them is sacrificial to protect frame and engine mounts.

I’ve ordered them and a new right crash bar

Happy new bike day...for a few days ago :D

Oh....and as for dropping it...:blast

You’d have been proud dude, last time I saw such a graceful pirouette was Torville and Dean winning gold at the olympics :D

The weather properly caught me out, but at least my poop hole still works and holds in poop :D

On an £18000 bike I would think depreciation would be £2000 at least by just leaving the showroom. I would imagine dealer margin around 10% they’re not going to give you that back , if you’ve got an odd ball model that would scare you.

Do not feel too bad about dropping it , I recently picked up a set of engine bars for my KTM, a brand new set ,however , the left side was scratched from a very low speed drop and had been swapped from one from a new kit.

Owner of the KTM had apparently not even got out of the dealers car park before he dropped the bike causing the scratched engine bar , he had paid for the new engine bar kit got the dealer to fit the new left one and then ridden off leaving the dealership with the rest of the kit to dispose of .

OK then make it ÂŁ4000 for a scratched one.

P.S. beware using cylinder head protectors if they are a close fir to the heads, they trapped water and promote corrosion - I know. At the very least make sure after a salty ride, wash AND dry thoroughly with a blow dryer.

Mine fell over on the drive, with only the BMW cylinder head protectors fitted, no crash bars. Only damage was a cracked plastic part on the cylinder head protector, which cost a tenner or so to replace. I think the "need" for crash bars to protect from damage is overstated...

in my wisdom a few years ago I bought a moto guzzi California, watching too much Dirty Harry ,anyway after 9 months traded in for a GS , ouch that was a sore one to take, but I wasn’t enjoying it. Found out the hard way that there is a very small market for guzzi’s here and dealers don’t like stock hanging about their showroom for any length of time.

You’re not the first flip, my mate got his new Gs bike delivered in a van and still dropped it two miles from home on his first ride. Was a shock seeing him and bike side down on the tarmac, because it was keyless he couldn’t switch the thing off in a panic, and the bike was pirouetting on its cylinder, I had to run over and hit the kill switch for him. He got away with a scuffed hand guard and he re sprayed the cylinder head so no real harm done
..oh and a broken toe!

If you need any proof that crash bars are not an essential item on a GS then just go to the BMW Off Road school. Their GS’s never used to be fitted with crash bars and they spent a lot of time being dropped with no major issues (other than scratched heads!).
