Hi folks. Apologies if this is in the wrong place. I just brought a new 1250 gs adventure rally te. Collecting Monday morning. Never had a new bike before I'll be trading my 2014 gs adventure in. I will have a 4hour spin home on it.. I'm aware there is a run in period. I thought I'd ask here for advice before I head home on it aswell as ye would have more advice than the manual is going to tell me. Much appreciated.
Regards Matt

Just find a twisty road, don’t labour bike, go up and down gears and most of all enjoy. You’ll be fine.

OK thanks.... I just don't want to do it wrong. Ha. I know the manual and the dealer will tell me to do it a particular way. But ye lot have done it loads of times and wanted your opinion over the dealer thanks

Key thing with running in a new vehicle is first 20 miles tyres and brakes need bedding in / scrubbing. Then as said as above don’t labour the engine. Use the gears, vary speed so avoid motorways A N roads at constant speed.

New bike tyres usually have releasing agent on their surface which results in reduced adhesion, it's recommended to take it easy for 100 miles or so

Enjoy your new bike

Thanks for the advise. Iv allowed for the whole day tomorrow to get home anyway. Should be a 5 hour spin back not using motor way. Looking forward to it. Going to miss my 1200 for sure but looking forward to see what the 1250 is all about

They also like heat cycles so pull over for a sausage roll and a coffee for an hour on the way home and take in the view of your new bike :drool

Just do what the manual tells you. There is no one on the internet who knows more about running your BMW in than BMW do.

get your first service booked in now

This ^^
I missed my service last September due to a broken shoulder. Now it’s healed a bit I can ride,so back in January I contacted the dealers to book in for service and swingarm mod, the earliest 13th March. Apparently they are flat out.

....or.....if its on a PCP/Lease, just drive it how you want!!!!

seriously, very hard to really screw up these things.

I generally follow post #2 and after 3-400miles its drive how i want.

If BMW's are anything like Triumph, it will already have been redlined in every gear before it left the factory.
I wouldn't let mine drop below 3000rpm as that is labouring in my book, but not above 7000.
Taking it easy wont remove the release agent fom the tyres, getting each part of the tyre to touch the tarmac is best for that, riding it steady is more to do with making sure the wheel studs are tight and the balance something like correct, rather than anything to do with the tyres themselves.
Glazed bores from taking it too easy is the best way for the bike to use oil. Riding it really hard may mean it wont do 200,000 miles, so somewhere in between will do the job.

Thanks folks... ya I made it home. I actually just rode it normally really. And kept of the motorways... not easy to ride these handy anyway. What a machine way better than the 1200 soon as I left the dealership I could tell the difference.. iv my first service booked in next month. As the dealers are flat out at the moment. Any way thanks for the help :okay
