Having discussed and discounted the BMW finance package option thing on a new bike, I have today signed on the dotted line for a second-hand F700GS, in the faster red colour. I've ridden 650 and 800 GS's in the past and couldn't really notice any great difference in the engine. I'm sure the 800 will be a better off road bike with it's longer, better suspension, but I'm not intending to use it off road in any serious way. So it's the sensible man's GS for me...

I took it for a quick thrash today, just to make sure, and loved every minute of it. I'll miss the F650 that's being sold to pay for it, but I'm very excited.

It'll be my commuting, country lane, pootling around bike - the K1200 will still be for "best", summer holidays, longer trips and stuff, but it'll be interesting to see whether the 700 proves to be the bike of choice for more and more rides.

Did I mention that I'm excited?

What are the 'must have' extras? And what do I need to look out for?

Fat geezer sized panty liners, from the sounds of it Throbbin' :thumb

Enjoy the new bike, it's always a thrill getting one :clap

Thank you, gentlemen. Good advice as ever. :D

Having followed Wapping's gamely-ridden 800 round France and bits of Germany, I'm a bit concerned that I might find the 1200 a little redundant.

I'm excited for you Robin :thumb

Bet you end up using it more and more than the K :augie

:beerjug:

Extras required? Ha .... maps of further afield :D

Happy new bike Robin.

Go n-éirí an bóthar leat. ** :thumb2

** May the road rise up to meet you.

Excellent engine, on the F800R variant at least.

Decent MPG (if that bothers you).

Haven't ridden the other versions, but as Joe Walsh sort of said, "They tell me they're nice"

:thumby: good choice :thumby:

I rode both and went for the 8, each very capable bikes as I'm sure others will agree.

I'd certainly consider a new screen, just to make the road miles a little more comfy. And possibly hand guards to keep the wind off :)
People moan about the stock seat but I find it ok, give it a try and see what suits.

Enjoy

Heres to new bike excitement :beerjug:

Although never ridden a F700GS I know it's a great bike, had my F650GS twin from new for 30,511 smiles :D . other than 4 more bhp, twin brake discs with wider plasics on the false tank it's similar :thumby:

(I now have the F8,GS)

must have extra's :D depends on your personal needs, wants and taste being a seasoned rider I guess you know what you want and like on your bike.

Most over the years change the screen first, some the seat. Saying that, over the years the newer models come with better screens and seats :D:D

:postpics :D:D

I say just ride it, wait and see you might like it just as it is :nenau

what do you need to look out for :duno most niggles have been ironed out so possibly other road users, shit weather oh and Hi Viz :thumb

a lot different to your old single, smooth as a smooth thing :thumb2

Very nice bike, enjoy :beerjug:
