Plenty of bods on this site love spoked wheels - you'll easily be able to find someone with a recent GS willing to do a swap probably with cash your way to boot

Not wishing to swap anything just yet, a delivery date would be nice, but a pici of a Rallye with alloys would be nice to see

I am not the worlds best bike cleaner and I always wanted cast wheels for my 1150GS's.
For the Rallye, my local dealers, Allan Jefferies, were brilliant, swapped from spoked to cast and I had the RRP cost of £355 knocked off my bill.

Put alloys on my GSA and it made an amazing difference to handling and cleaning!

When I ordered my GS I was quoted 6 weeks delivery, but the dealer explained that customer orders take preference over bikes that are just going to sit on a showroom floor. It turned up afetr 4 weeks, so seems he was right.

Swmbo picked her new 650 up yesterday...18 weeks after ordering...600 mile service been done this saturday, ready for france week after

600 miles is only a couple of Sunday Rideouts.
Got my new bike delivered on Firday and booked it in for 1st service in two weeks time - would have done it next week if they could have fitted it in.
What do you need to get to know exactly, the gears, clutch and throttle are all in the right place, you may struggle to operate the indicators and tend to beep the horn instead - but in many parts of Europe your better off swapping indicator use for mucho beeping anyway.
I assume your having BMW luggage so that will be fitted when you collect the bike so apart from knocking up a few hundred miles not much else to do.
When changing bikes I try to get a little weekend away before any big trips just to get hang of loading up luggage, check Comms system, ensure comfort is OK etc. but would not think twice about doing a trip just after collecting a bike if thats the way the dates worked out.
If it don't turn up in time go and rent one and send the bill to your lying stealer
I did a deal on a bike the last working day before going on Holiday and arranged for delivery the day I returned - all went well, the bike turned up on time, with the extra's I asked for fitted (Free of charge) and the delivery was FOC along with the first service - obviously this was not a BMW dealer

I've owned a GS since 2004, and so the riding caracteristics I'm aware of. I will own this bike for a fair few years, it may well be the last bike I buy, and so it's quite important for me that it's run in properly and that I'm completly happy with it before I set of on it for a months holiday.
All should be well then 
As for run-in, there are so many conflicting opinions, I follow this advice which I have heard from a number of engine specialists:-

On the other hand of my 30-odd bikes only 4 have been new so I have no idea how the other 26 had been run in, none of them went bang on me or appeared to have suffered any issues that could remotely have been related to the run-in procedure.
If the bike runs fine then there is not much to worry about, if it has a problem on day one the dealer will sort it out, apart from that faults happen, in fact the more miles you do the more chance something will develop, regardless of new bike, used bike, or current steed - all mechanical things can break and mostly this cannot be predicted.

Very interesting article, My bike was jefferies demonstrator which I bought back in 2004, and so was definately riden hard from day one, and has allways had plenty of grunt and run well whatever's been thrown at it, and it's been abused on quite few occasions. Having said that if you read through the article and the symtoms associated with engines not run hard from day one is the oil smelling of fuel, which passes the rings apparently, Every time I've change the oil it allways smells a little of petrol/un burnt fuel.

just received Email bike is built, due to leave factory this week
Thats good news, I was just checking through the calender, and I took the test ride on Friday11th june, but didn't place the order till the monday14th,5 days prior to your date of the 18th, and so by that reconing I should here something next week, fingers crossed
In 2010 I wanted a GSA with Enduro gearbox so I had to do a special order. It took less than 4 weeks but it was in August with delivery in September. Delivery time is related to demand which is obviously higher in June. Although I was expecting less new bikes this year because of the new model due in Milan this autumn.
