Got it yesterday ! R12 GS TE with extra lights, bars, boxes and Nav 5 in black. Took a wee scoot (70 miles) out today between showers and would say the following :

1) compared with my old RT TC, loads more power and much smoother. Feels lighter to throw around too but I had to restrain myself as its farmers-dropping-cowshite-all-along-the-public-road-and-not-cleaning-it-up-season and it was a wee bit wet and new tyres and all that.

2) gearbox is great, at least at the moment. no false neutrals, no difficulty finding gears, bit of a thump into first but thats Ok

3) the Nav integration is very slick and the wheel thingy to control it is a doodle

4) wind protection whilst not at all bad is obviously not as good as the RT but the bike is a hooligan compared with the RT and thats worth the difference.

5) ESA is a world better than the previous version on my old RT. seems softer on the normal setting but the road holding, turn in and steering accuracy is better.

6) despite only a wee bit of H2O and a smattering of cowshite the whole shebang was filthy when i got home. the RT was a rinse and leave bobbie, this is gonna take a lot more cleaning.

Looking forward to get it run in and on some thicker oil I hope the engine will be even smoother.

Oh and the heated grips work fine on the lower setting !!

And why in God's name would you want to put "thicker oil" in it? You don't think BMW considered this for a little while before making a decision?

My new GSA get's delivered next week, I popped into dealer yesterday to view it and I was told that the oil in the bike from brand new is changed at 600 mile first service for a thicker one, so I guess that's what SMcGirr is referring to when he states "Looking forward to get it run in and on some thicker oil I hope the engine will be even smoother?"

Enjoy your bike SMcgirr!

Yep Jonno, the running in oil is apparently very thin stuff, I think after 600 it will be proper stuff

I also swapped from an RT TC and fitting a Puig screen makes a massive difference - the wind protection is now as good as the RT :thumby:

There seems to be a "movement" of the RT folk back towards GSes. Stan will be next! Maybe it's the offers on the GS. I rode the new WC RT back to back with the GS and just couldn't make up my mind, would have been happy/ delighted with either but Williams would deal on the GS but not the RT. The Nav V sealed the deal.

Sven, have you got a picture of the Puig screen at all?

Who said my name?!!

I keep thinking about it!
Currently in the process of changing the van; so will see how much money is left over. I'd want a good run on a GSA first, see if the road/wind noise is tolerable yet.

Puig screen is great for touring, you do need the cymarc or wunderlich additional screen brace though. I've got an MRA screen on mine with the flip up lip, and it works well.
