1150 GS on Y plate.

Ok, bit of a dumb question maybe, but the local 14 year old brake specialist will tell me I need new brakes regardless. I have a genuine 7k on the clock and the brakes are original. The bike is used in and around London so the(ABS) brakes get used quite a bit.

They are fine at the moment but I will be taking a trip to Croatia in May and I don't fancy losing time hunting out a BMW brakes. Any advice ?

You'll probably clock up 3,000 miles at least on a return trip to Croatia, so I'd fit new pads all round & consider new tyres as well unless you've replaced them recently.

You can always re-use half worn tyres & pads at a later date. Nothing worse than needing new consumables in the middle of nowhere whilst on holiday.

We covered 3,500 miles to Budapest & back, returning via Zagreb, Porec, Ljubljana, the Dolomites & the French & Italian Alps.

I don`t agree with re-fitting used pads.
Pads actually wear with the discs, and take on the disc profile.
This is partly why you have to bed-in new pads.
If the ones fitted are less than half worn,I`d take new ones with you,as ready-to-use replacements.
If they`re more than half worn,I`d just bin them and fit new ones
before travelling.
Definately fit new tyres before travelling.

Its the rear pads that suffer in London use. Standard BMW rear last pads last 5000 miles if you're lucky. The fronts on the other hand last 3-4 times this distance.

If you have to replace your rear pads, EBC kevlar as opposed to the HH rated pads do the job nicely and last a lot longer than the BMW pads.

My 03 Adv has done 10k and as yet has not required any pads at all.

If your going on a trip get em checked but remeber that long trips will wear the pads much less than round town .
