Hi

I didn't know about this stuff so wanted to share it to anyone else that didn't.

I'm heading to Russia next month solo and wanted something substantial whilst I sleep.

These pins are really good plus the chain is meant to be bolt crop proof (16mm boron steel). Pragmasis make it - I've no connection with them other than being a new customer !

Not cheap at £230 all in but it will last my WHOLE life!

Yes I noticed the rust on my spoke heads (!) I've just ACF 50'd them !

Me and the wife have been using the same setup on our bikes for over 5 years. I have the Pragmasis 19mm chain and she has the Almax 19mm. Both into ground anchors in the shed. She bought hers after mine so has the fancy version of the padlock with the red, green and yellow keys. So simple to use, especially since she now has the new r1200r so can put the pin through the shaft like I do on the GS.

A brilliant bit of kit and Pragmasis are a top company to deal with.

I've got pinch pin, with 19mm short chain fixed to their Torc ground anchor (resin bonded to garage floor) - highly recommended :thumb

Remember, unless chained to a fixed object, one big russian will be able to pick up and walk away with the bike! :D

I use the same setup ie ground anchor , Almax chain , anti pinch pin. But when away, it has to be chained to something . If there are two bikes you could chain them together .

That's what we did for the last two weeks blasting around Spain. Parked them back to back and put a chain through both rear axles and wheel spokes. Not totally foolproof, but makes it awkward enough for them to reconsider. After all, if they want it they'll have it.

Fit a traker!!! about £300 and if it goes walk abouts you stand a good chance of getting it back, where are you going in Russia !! just done a 3 month trip aroud the area and had no problems at all.

St Petersburg, Moscow on a three week round trip.

Glad you had no problems - I imagine you've never tried to claim on the insurance bought at the border

On the 2011 R1200R the pin can just about go through the frame.

If the bike is wanted for spares (easiest way to easy money) they'll cut the frame tubes.

Some years ago caravans and cars were being stolen in Manchester and taken to a foil lined shed where they could take out the tracker in their own time.

What's the ideal chain thickness and length to use with the pin when touring?

Not all chains will fit on the pin, check with Pragmasis (securityforbikes.com). And not all padlocks will fit on the pin, best off buying the complete set from Pragmasis.

Heres mine...

Pragamsis 19mm Protector chain, Pragmasis Anti-pinch pin through rear hub, & Squires SC665 padlock.

Ignore the plank of wood, the concrete was still wet..

Think the minimum size is 16mm. We have a Pragmasis and an Almax that fit. The pin only takes the specific squire padlock, no other. At least that's what they said when I bought mine years ago. It's machined to an exact size where the lock fits.

The 'weakest link' is surely the Squire lock, when it comes to millimeter diameters...but hey, a battery operated grinder would attack it all I supose...
Still, it looks like a powerful way to secure a bike to a fixed point.

Would a kind of kevlar sleeve not be the solution to a grinder used by thieves....something in the same trend as the materials used in chainsaw protective gear?
Dunno....Maybe just a idea to rule out that battery powered part of the theft business...

What length pin are you using ? They are out of stock on the 250mm and I'm worried the 290 is long enough to give a good grinding point.

Just measured mine and it's 290mm. Pretty sure that's the size they recommended for the LC if you put the pin in from the drive side. Here pic of it fitted (with the optional pinch pin washer) and it's all pretty snug.

Depends which side of the bike your inserting the pin. Inserting from the nearside you can use a shorter pin as the pin head sits in the recess of the hub. Inserting from the offside requires a longer pin. Another consideration is if your likely to want to carry the pin in your top box, check it will fit.

Also, don't let your chain lay on the floor like this..

Lift it up so its more resistant to being hit. I cut a slit in my chains fabric sleeve which I pass the pin through..
