New Clutch

Hello All,

Just got my bike back after some major work. Two oil seals in the gearbox had failed resulting in an oil leak. I was told the clutch had also been contanminated with oil, resulting in the need for a new clutch. Thankfully the bike is still under warranty so no cost to me.

Unfortunately, it is now a pig to get into neutral. I need to use all four fingers on the clutch lever - not because it's stiff - otherwise my fingers get in the way and I need to pull the lever back to the bar to be able to shift into neutral. The lever is adjusted to it's widest span.

When I pointed this out to the service bloke he had a quick bimble around on the bike and said it was because it's a new clutch and they are all like that. I was also told that there is now other scope for adjusting the clutch other than the span adjuster.

I've got no experience of a brand new clutch as the bike had 2.5K on it when I bought it. I had to use the same technique on the 'orrible 650GS I had as a loaner.

I'm not looking to disparage the dealer as I've been pleased with the service. Some input /advice would be much appreciated though.

Many Thanks
Paul

I've had 2 new bikes - an r12GS and an R12GSA - both of which have been fine from new with 2 fingers on the clutch. I smell porkies...

Last week I had new gearbox seals and a new clutch (because of oil contamination) too.

No problems at all finding neutral in the two hundred miles since.

So there is a direct comparison for you.

Take it back and kick up.

Good luck.

Bugger. Thought that might be the case. I was trying not to be too cynical, for once.
Oh, well. Back to the dealer next week.

Cheers Guys.

My bike went through the same process--oil seals, new clutch--a month or so back. SLM fitted one of the new design clutches, but when the mechanic went to road test it, he found the same problem as you describe with the clutch.

You've obviously got one of the new type of clutches, and something else needs to be replaced as well. Sorry to be vague about it, but by all means call SLM service and ask what happened with my bike.

I picked mine up on Friday after a new gearbox and clutch. Works fine, just like when it was new. Dealer speak with forked tongue.
:)

If the cluch has been replaced and is now more difficult to find neutral
my suspisions would be that the new cluch is slighty 'dragging' ie not fully disconneting the drive to the gearbox 100%
Did they replace the whole cluch unit or just the friction plate ?
whatever they did it aint right , so take it back, dont listen to any old 'bollox' from the dealer that 'it will bed in'
It should be as it was when it was new!
