Looks like I'm having new front discs under warranty as they are rapidly moving out of tolerance and heavily corroding on the inside edges. 3800 relatively gentle miles on an 08 12GS.

Still awaiting confirmation but looks like BMW will say that I'll have to pay for a new set of pads at the same time. That's about £95  plus fitting.

Does the panel think that this is reasonable? I usually get about 15k from a set of front pads so am slightly miffed.

Thats a lot for a set of pads, but still a lot cheaper than new disks. I suspect the dealers are hoping for a little something for their troubles via your wallet with the old 'consumables' excuse.

If you have to pay it, ask for the old pads as they are your property anyway and a wear item. I bet they are hardly worn, just give them a glaze bust with some sandpaper/emery and put 'em in the cupboard for when you need a replacement set.

I had new discs fitted under warranty, together with new pads so I think you should be pushing back on that one.

Whilst I wouldn't bother changing pads that had plenty of meat on them, strictly speaking you are supposed to replace pads and discs together so if WBM have accepted that the discs need replacing then replacing pads is all part of the same work, surely :nenau Why should you have to pay for them :nenau

Chester BMW replaced my discs under warranty - No Issues....

So why do you need new pads when you fit new disks?

You don't fit new disks when you fit new pads, so what's the logic when you do it the other way around?

So that they don't take as long to bed into each other. I replaced one disc and not the pads on a R1100R. A couple of emergency stops bedded them in nicely :)

Personally don't think it reasonable to expect you to pay for pads at all, unless they are well worn, which is unlikely at 3800m.

In my first 20,000m on my 05 GS I had 3 discs and eventually a new front wheel. Pads were renewed on each occasion FOC :thumb

Bikes now up to 46,000m and its still on the same pads, so they've done around 26,000m.

When you say moving out of tolerence, is this due to distortion from flat, or to scoring of the surface?

So you don't imprint the wear pattern from the old pads in to the new discs!

If your going to to keep the old pads (and I have in the past) rub them flat on abrasive paper on a good flat surface (glass?)

Pads and Disc's

Hi Guys

Had my disc's changed at 6000 mile due to a waped disc, pads also replaced as part of the job all under warranty.:clap

From flat. Just in tolerance atm but will be well out within another 1000m as te resonance builds up and braking forces make tge disks warp further.

Thanks for all the info - feel more confident to puch for pads to be included in the warranty claim.

Had my front disc's replaced twice n the 1200 and had new pads both times.

I was asked to pay on the second time but asked if consequential damage was not covered under the warranty. I was told it was but they were not damaged but worn and would not bed in, I told the dealer to replace them under warranty if they were defective or refit them if they were not - they replaced them.

I don't think the dealer wanted to refit them as it is bad practice to fit new discs and not pads and I was not going to pay for replacements.

just have a conversation with the dealer.

For me, if the pads need to be replaced as a result of the discs needing to be replaced, then I would say that was all part of the same job, and a result of the fault.

I would not want to be paying for anything if it's connected to a warranty claim, and I'd push for getting it all done at their cost.

It is not your fault the work needs to be done, so why should you pay? :nenau

I've had discs replaced on cars....the pads have always been replaced at the same time.

Ring up a couple of BMW dealers service departments anonymously, including the one doing your warranty work, and tell them you need your discs changing. Ask what BMW best practice is with regard to pads - replace or re-use? Get the names of the people you spoke to as I'd bet they all say replace the pads.

As your are having discs changed under warranty anyway, the pads have to come out. The standard labour charge for changing pads includes the time required to remove the old... Therefore, if you do end up having to pay for pads, then logically, how the hell can you be charged labour for pads?

I think you're worrying over nothing. I've had two discs replaced under warranty, one by Vines, the other by SLM. I didn't have to pay for pads on either occaision.

Good luck!!

Had my discs replaced after 18000 miles under warranty............replaced pads free too.:)
