New engine needed.

Who in Scotland is offering to do the work?

If they are reputable they will be known by folk on this site and you should get feed back as to yey or ney

If he is a moonlighting bmw tech and is the source of an engine BMW think is scrapped then it’s highly unlikely he is going to offer up his name, least of all on a public forum.

Yes I see your point ;)

Its a tricky one! :nenau
I can see the appeal in handing over by bike and getting it back with a nice ‘new’ engine, if all goes to plan.
I’ll keep you guys updated....

I don't think changing an engine on a GS would be too onerous. The only difficult part would be lifting and moving the engines. If it were my bike I'd do it myself.

Get yourself up here then and I’ll put the kettle on!! ;)
I am trying to find a decent bike mechanic who is local who can do the job, otherwise it goes to Scotland.

Dont do it !!!

The more your posting, the more the cynic in me is screaming SCAM!!!!!

it's in Scotland for a reason!

1) It's not local so you cant pop over and have a look see.
2) It's in Scotland, so even if it were gen U ine it's a 10hr round trip to do anything.
3) Send your bike, and you will loose that as well.

So you'll be a Bike, 1K & £350 out of pocket.

this might sound really harsh, but your "desire" to get the bike back on the road has given you tunnel vision & rose tinted specs.

Get the engine first, asses it's condition, then see what can be done

If the engine is pukka, then i'll eat my hat & buy you a pint, when you bring it to Dent ;)

Do a search, there was a long standing member on here who got scammed out of almost 14K on here by buying a long distance bike

if i was sending a grand to someone i did not know, i would go to scotland and pick it up.

Yes it will take 2 days and £80 of fuel. Bet with some haggling you could knock this iff the price when you arrived.

I was scammed out of £110 last week and boy did it piss me off (gumtree) i am just glad it was not more. Police not interested despite me having verified contact details.

If i was scammed out of a £1000 I would be more than pissed off.

Unfortunately as i have learnt this week there are lots of people who wish to rob you.

I live in Burton on Trent and if u want a hand for half a day or so if you decide to fit yourself, happy to help. Not a mechanic but an extra pair of hands might be useful.

Fastest way to confirm if it's a scam.

Tell the vendor, you want to collect and inspect, and payment will be via bank tranfer on inspection

Ask for a postcode where you can collect / inspect the engine ...

if you get neither or it looks dodgy FFS walk away

Some great advice there thanks.
I have paid for the engine but via PayPal so it it goes pear shaped then I should get the money back. Hopefully.
I do have the sellers details. Address phone number etc.
Thanks Malco for the offer of help. As you are local I may take you up on that.
Still n 2 minds which way to go. :blast

Sellers details mean squat!

it's an address thats all.

i could set up an account, sell you a bike, give my ex wifes address or the local nick, for all you know, once ive got the money i'm off

Paypal refund the fees, yeah right.

They will attempt to recover the fees from the seller. no fees in account , no money returned.

No one on here is out to do you out of a sale or an engine, but were all here to stop you being ripped off.

post the advert details, prehaps someone knows the seller and can give you peace of mind.

Bike mechanics aren't busy at the moment. How about asking the former guys from BVM Moto in Stroud who set up on their own for a price to change the engine over for you? I've only ever heard good things about them and all my dealings with Tim when he was at BVM were good. Totally decent honest guy with genuine personal interest in bikes and always wanted to do the right thing for me as their customer. I'm sure others on here will be able to give us the name/number of the name they trade under.

I have bike trailers if you need to borrow one and Staffordshire is only 90 minutes from Stroud.

Check with PayPal as I thought the seller had to ship to a verified PayPal address. If you arrange collection is it still covered?

I've used the PayPal guarantee to sort two fraudsters in the past and both times I was refunded, but I was scrupulous in following their rules - maybe worth checking.

Thanks chaps.
Some great advice there.
I think I am now leaning towards getting the engine shipped here. ( safer option)
The seller assured me it is now pelleted and ready for shipping and I have had a quote of £63 from a pallet company for delivery.
The original advert from Gumtree is linked in page 1 of this post.
